About The Position

The Defect Analysis Engineer is responsible for identifying, analyzing, and resolving product and component defects to ensure they meet established quality, reliability, and performance standards. This role focuses heavily on the meticulous dismantling and teardown analysis of battery cells and components to identify the absolute root cause of failures. The position requires a high level of concentration and the willingness to invest extended periods of time into complex physical teardowns. By correlating analytical findings with manufacturing process parameters, the engineer will drive effective cross-functional problem-solving to improve manufacturing yield performance and prevent defect recurrence.

Requirements

  • Ability to perform precision battery cell dismantling without health or physical restrictions (e.g., capable of working in Dry Room / Glove Box environments, handling organic solvents/chemical substances, and utilizing precision hand tools).
  • Demonstrated patience, strong concentration, and physical stamina required to remain fully engaged in extended, time-consuming teardown and defect-tracing activities.
  • Solid understanding or background in lithium-ion battery structure, chemistry, and core manufacturing processes.
  • Demonstrated experience or strong knowledge in operating material analysis equipment and interpreting analytical data.
  • Need and capability of finding improvement ideas for yield in components and inspections through rigorous defect tracking.
  • Drive Effective Problem Solving and support cross-functional teams to implement solutions based on concrete analysis conclusions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to prepare meaningful technical reports on work performed.
  • Positive, dedicated attitude and ability to work in a team environment to drive success.
  • Ability to obtain, understand, and apply complex technical data for furthering functional competencies.
  • Willingness and ability to work flexible hours or overtime occasionally to accommodate urgent defect analysis requests and external testing timelines.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Chemical, Materials/New Materials, Mechanical, Electrical, or related disciplines), preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in Engineering, Quality, or R&D roles in an industrial environment, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide clear, data-driven defect analysis reports and technical documentation to multi-functional teams.
  • Perform precision dismantling and teardown analysis (Teardown Analysis) on defective battery cells and components (including In-line, Inspection, and Field returns).
  • Lead and execute challenging cell teardown tasks that occasionally require significant time investment and deep concentration to safely isolate and capture precise defect sites.
  • Operate and maintain analytical lab equipment (such as SEM/EDS, CT, EA-300 and electrochemical cyclers) to ensure optimal productivity and analysis accuracy.
  • Close communication with multi-functional teams, including Production, Engineering, Development, and Quality, to implement verified corrective actions.
  • Attend meetings with Global Suppliers, Headquarters, and LG-Chem Engineering Center as required; support if related to component defects, material changes, and quality issues.
  • Establish standard analysis methodologies and procedures to optimize defect tracking capabilities.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • 100% Employer paid Medical, Dental, and Vision
  • Generous paid holidays
  • Tuition Assistance for continuing education
  • Vehicle Discount Program on General Motors branded vehicles
  • Communication Stipend for Personal Cell Phone
