About The Position

Sonoran Sales Company is seeking an experienced Quality Control Technician with an active AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) Level 2 certification to support our steel pipe fabrication operations for municipal and industrial waterline projects at our Eloy, Arizona facility. In this role, you will inspect welded steel pipe, fittings, and spool assemblies to ensure compliance with AWWA standards, our STI/SPFA quality certification program, and internal quality requirements. This is a hands-on shop-floor position ideal for someone with strong attention to detail and solid experience inspecting large-diameter pipe welds.

Requirements

  • Active AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) Level 2 certification
  • Minimum [2–5] years of experience in quality control or welding inspection, ideally in steel pipe fabrication or heavy industrial/municipal construction
  • Working knowledge of AWWA standards for steel water pipe (C200, C206, C207, C208) and/or AWS D1.1
  • Proficiency reading and interpreting pipe fabrication drawings, isometrics, and welding symbols
  • Experience with precision measuring instruments and pipe-specific inspection documentation
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work on the shop floor in Eloy, AZ, including standing, bending, and climbing around large-diameter pipe for extended periods, in an outdoor/industrial desert climate

Nice To Haves

  • Experience inspecting large-diameter (12"+) steel water pipe or similar municipal infrastructure products
  • Prior experience working within an STI/SPFA-certified fabrication facility
  • Certification or working knowledge of NDE methods (UT, RT, MT, PT)
  • Experience with pipe coating/lining inspection and holiday testing
  • Familiarity with hydrostatic testing procedures for fabricated pipe
  • Associate's degree or technical certification in welding technology, metallurgy, or a related field

Responsibilities

  • Perform visual weld inspections (VT) on longitudinal seams, girth (circumferential) welds, and fitting welds on steel water pipe and fabricated components
  • Verify compliance with AWWA C200, C206, C207, C208 and applicable AWS D1.1 requirements for fabricated steel water pipe
  • Review and verify welding procedure specifications (WPS), procedure qualification records (PQR), and welder performance qualifications
  • Conduct dimensional inspections of pipe, fittings, and flanges (diameter, wall thickness, out-of-roundness, bevel, fit-up, alignment) using calipers, micrometers, and gauges
  • Coordinate and/or interpret NDE results on pipe welds, including UT, RT, MT, and PT as required by project specifications
  • Inspect pipe coatings and linings (e.g., cement mortar lining, polyurethane, epoxy, tape coat) for thickness, holiday testing, and adhesion where applicable
  • Witness or support hydrostatic pressure testing of fabricated pipe sections and spools
  • Document inspection results, generate nonconformance reports (NCRs), and track corrective actions through resolution
  • Maintain accurate inspection records, material traceability, and quality documentation in accordance with our STI/SPFA-certified quality program and project QA/QC plans
  • Support internal and third-party audits related to STI/SPFA quality certification
  • Communicate inspection findings clearly to fabrication, engineering, and project management teams
  • Ensure compliance with all shop safety protocols while performing inspections
