About The Position

The Quality Assurance Engineer, Welding Professional, is responsible for assisting the QAD with the maintenance and execution of Hayward Tyler’s Quality Assurance Program’s. The QA Engineer, Welding Professional, will ensure that program maintenance activities (e.g. welding, training, audits) are performed and documented as required and that the program requirements are updated as necessary to comply with changes in the governing Codes, rules, and regulations. This role bridges the gap between advanced welding engineering and quality assurance, developing, implementing, and auditing welding procedures to ensure manufactured products meet top-tier industry standards and structural integrity requirements.

Requirements

  • US Citizenship is required for this position due to Federal Contract requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Welding, Engineering, Metallurgy, or Materials Science, or a related field experience with an Associate’s degree in a field identified above.
  • 3-5 years of hands-on experience in welding engineering and quality control, specifically within a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
  • Proven experience in compliance programs related to 10CFR50 Appendix B and NQA-1 in a manufacturing environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of nuclear regulatory requirements, as well as 10CFR50 Appendix B, 10CFR21 and experience with maintaining a robust quality program.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to conduct risk assessments and propose effective solutions.
  • Strong technical writing ability for authoring procedures.
  • Excellent verbal communication for liaising with third-party inspectors, engineering staff, and shop floor technicians.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and conduct training sessions.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to the highest quality standards, particularly concerning nuclear safety culture and pressure equipment integrity.
  • Must be able to occasionally maneuver in, around, and under pressure vessels, piping systems, fabricated structures, equipment, and other items.
  • Be able to lift 50 pounds safely.
  • Must be able to differentiate colors and have vision (with or without correction) that meets code requirements.
  • Travel overseas and outside of the continental US.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, implement, and maintain the company's Quality Assurance Program’s in accordance ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section III, Division 1 and 5, Section VIII Div. 1 and 2, Military/NAVSEA program, 10CFR50 Appendix B, 10CFR21, and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) rules and regulatory guides.
  • Primary role will be welding activities at HTI.
  • Write, review, qualify, and approve weld procedures, work instructions, and techniques to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and requirements.
  • Perform visual weld inspections and conduct root-cause analysis on weld-related defects to implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Manage welder continuity and conduct welder performance qualification (WPQ) testing to ensure all operators are certified for their specific tasks.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for Authorized Inspection Agency (AIA), addressing weld-related aspects of audits/surveys, non-conformances, corrective actions, and design/fabrication issues.
  • Evaluate and monitor the welding processes of external suppliers to ensure incoming materials and sub-assemblies meet quality standards.
  • Ensure all weld equipment and supplies comply with ASME Section IX, Military/NAVSEA, and project-specific requirements.
  • Manage the approved supplier list (ASL), conducting audits or surveys and documenting annual reviews.
  • Lead or participate in audits of HTI by customers or regulatory agencies, acting as an additional resource with the auditor(s) during the entire audit process.
  • Conduct periodic internal audits to assess the effectiveness of the Quality Program to ensure audit readiness.
  • Utilize lean manufacturing and quality tools (e.g., Six Sigma, FMEA) to optimize welding processes, reduce defect rates, and improve overall production efficiency.
  • Assist Quality Engineer(s) during absences and high workflow periods.
  • Substitute for documentation coordinator and inspection activities during absences and during high workflow periods.
  • Execute quality plans, controls, and ensure product and process quality assurance in accordance with quality program, regulation, and contractual requirements.
  • Assist the QA Director in monitoring the quality program and customer contract requirements, including tracking, analyzing, reporting, and problem-solving.
  • Drive down the cost of quality from both internally and externally made products and services, with a major focus on costs from DMRs and warranties.
  • Participate in nuclear/quality related user groups and conferences (ASME, NIAC, NUPIC, etc).
