Requirements

  • Certified/licensed as a Qualified Medication Aide (QMA) within the state.

Responsibilities

  • Administers non-parenteral medications and performs treatments according to written physicians’ orders and within the QMA scope of practice outlined by the state in which practicing.
  • Observes and documents any adverse reactions, takes appropriate measures, including notifying the nursing supervisor and/or Director of Nursing.
  • Assists with the admission and assessment of new residents.
  • Administers PRN medications and performs treatments upon authorization of the nursing supervisor, and/or the director of nursing. Documents results of all PRN medications and treatments.
  • Takes and records temperatures, pulses, respirations, and blood pressures in accordance with departmental policy and procedure. May perform Accuchecks once approved to perform this skill by the in-service director.
  • Adheres to the resident's care plan and medication schedules, adjusts schedules as needed and notifies nursing supervisor as appropriate.
  • Promptly addresses resident toileting needs and incontinence issues within state and/or federal regulations. Changes incontinent residents and rinses dirty linen before sending it to the laundry.
  • Make routine rounds of assigned residents and promptly reports unusual symptoms, changes, accidents, and/or injuries to the nursing supervisor, and/or the director of nursing.
  • Documents pertinent information in the resident’s medical records in accordance with departmental policies and procedures and Department of Health regulations.
  • Responds to call lights in a timely manner and provides or obtains the necessary care.
  • Performs restorative nursing procedures and follow-up care.
  • Assists with social services and life enrichment programming, as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including working as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) when assigned by the nursing supervisor and/or the director of nursing.
