About The Position

Weyerhaeuser is seeking a QC Technician for their Kalispell Complex in Montana. This role is part of the leadership team and involves ensuring the highest quality of plywood and lumber manufactured in North America. The QC Technician acts as a product ambassador, verifying that products meet APA and PLIB specifications and customer requirements. This position requires daily interaction with operators, customers, distributors, certifiers, and sales/management teams. The role involves monitoring and recording product quality, conducting audits, and performing grade inspections. Responsibilities include understanding optimization, size checks, lumber and panel grades, veneer thickness, product mix, and technical manufacturing specifications. The technician will also need to understand wood product manufacturing to identify the machine center responsible for specific boards. Opportunities exist to learn about the drying process of lumber and veneer, conduct daily audits, propose cost-saving strategies, manage lumber and plywood quality to meet strategic production goals, and test products against specifications. The role also involves coaching and developing new hires and team members on quality expectations, providing feedback, and managing inventory tracking using SAP for both lumber and plywood. This includes managing the inventory tracking system, evaluating product levels, analyzing daily product levels, communicating with employees, and reporting on inventory to management. The successful candidate will have strong leadership and technical capabilities, with opportunities for professional growth, providing expert advice to management, conducting Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and potentially visiting customers to assess claims. There will be opportunities to supervise in various departments and contribute based on business needs.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required
  • A minimum of three plus years of experience in industrial panel or lumber production or quality assurance required.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work safely and effectively with others to accomplish group objectives.
  • Self-directed with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and achieve goals in a timely manner.
  • High degree of leadership skills and expertise in building and maintaining long-term relationships with the ability to quickly establish and maintain rapport.
  • Communicate in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.
  • Utilize business productivity and analysis tools including MS Office Suite (including Excell, PowerPoint), SPC.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Quality Assurance, Management or other related field preferred
  • A minimum of five years of specialized experience in plywood or lumber production is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist operators with the manufacturing of the highest quality plywood and lumber.
  • Ensure products meet specifications according to the APA and PLIB and all customer requirements.
  • Monitor and record product quality.
  • Conduct audits of final products.
  • Conduct grade inspections.
  • Build understanding of optimization and size checks throughout the manufacturing of lumber and plywood.
  • Deepen knowledge and expertise in lumber grades, panel grades, veneer thickness, product mix, and technical manufacturing specs.
  • Understand the manufacturing of wood products to be able to read product defects to understand what machine center made a particular board.
  • Build or develop a new understanding of the drying process of lumber and veneer.
  • Conduct daily audits of lumber, size checks, stacking of lumber (rough and finished grades).
  • Propose strategies to reduce costs and improve procedures.
  • Manage the quality of lumber and plywood business to accomplish strategic production goals.
  • Review product quality/mix while working closely with the mill to match required customer and APA/PLIB specifications.
  • Test product to determine quality based on required APA/PLIB and customer specifications.
  • Learn lumber grades, panel grades and veneer thicknesses.
  • Obtain and maintain APA/PLIB certifications.
  • Manage, support, coach and develop new hires, operators, and other team members regarding quality expectations by providing timely feedback and direction related to production and inventory.
  • Oversee the inventory as it moves throughout each process utilizing SAP in both lumber and plywood.
  • Manage inventory tracking system to record deliveries, production, and stock levels.
  • Evaluate product levels to improve inventory control procedures.
  • Analyze daily product levels to anticipate inventory problems and shortages.
  • Communicate with employees to meet business goals and address inventory issues.
  • Report on inventory levels and procedural efficiency to upper management.
  • Provide expert advice to the management team regarding information about how production is running and reaction to conditions related to quality.
  • Determine Root Cause Analyst (RCA) for issues that occur during the production process.
  • Visit customers and assess claims.
  • Supervise in various departments and contribute to areas based on the needs of the business.
