About The Position

Under general supervision, the Quality Control Microbiologist I is responsible for performing microbiological testing of raw materials, in-process products, finished products, water systems and environmental samples to verify compliance with established quality requirements. The position is also responsible for testing and test sampling of air as well as performing microbiological testing to verify and/or support equipment cleaning operations, sanitizing procedures, and process validations.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology (highly desirable) or Biology, Biochemistry, Food Science, Food Sanitation or comparable field with some courses in microbiology.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of work experience in a Microbiological Laboratory: experience in microbiology techniques (aseptic technique, sterilization techniques) and general laboratory practices required.
  • Must have a good understanding of microbiology test procedures including USP, AOAC, FDA and other compendial methods.
  • Ability to learn new methods and techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, keep accurate records and interpret data.
  • A positive attitude toward quality control and safety procedures, work in an organized manner, follow instructions and comply with company policies.
  • Must be proactive, results-oriented, with a strong attention to details and good work ethic.
  • Ability to work on week-end on rotation basis.

Responsibilities

  • Performing microbiological testing on raw materials, in-process products, finished products, stability samples, and water samples. Tests include, but are not limited to: Total Plate Count, Mold Count, Yeast Count, Coliforms, Enterobacteria, Escherichia coli, Salmonella sp., Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
  • Periodically verifying the effectiveness of cleaning and sanitation using both ATP bioluminescence method and standard plating methods.
  • Monitoring the environment of the plant, equipment, and employees via quantitative methods, and perform investigative test analysis as required.
  • Monitoring air quality in the laboratory, manufacturing areas and other areas as determined and/or directed by the Quality Control Laboratory Operations Manager.
  • Performing complex microbiological analysis, as determined by the Quality Control Laboratory Operations Manager and assist in method development, validation and transfer.
  • Monitoring the performance and calibration of instruments (balance, autoclave, incubators, water bath, refrigerators, ovens, etc.) used in the Microbiological Laboratory.
  • Maintaining sample logs on a daily basis to ensure timely testing and tracking of all samples.
  • Maintaining neat, accurate and complete test records and logs, maintaining testing database and issuing reports required by Management.
  • Helping in maintaining laboratory supplies and ordering necessary supplies.
  • Complying with applicable Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs) and well as Good Microbiological Practices.
  • Performing special projects and other duties as assigned by the Quality Control Laboratory Operations Manager.
