About The Position

This position conducts routine microbiological analyses, reads and interprets results under the guidance of the Microbiology Lab Supervisor. The role involves testing materials as assigned by priority listings, recording and evaluating data, and reviewing documentation for completeness. The QC Microbiologist I operates various laboratory equipment and complies with safety and GMP requirements. This role also supports a culture of safe production and operations by following all safety rules and procedures, actively participating in the safety program, and communicating safety information.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S) or equivalent from four-year university, college or technical school in Biology, Biochemistry, or related field.
  • Zero to one year microbiology lab experience.
  • Familiarity with general laboratory safety, procedures and instrumentation.
  • Excellent computer skills required, including Microsoft Word, Access and Excel.
  • Knowledge of cGMP regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as product specifications, departmental instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, averages, ratios, proportions, and the metric system to practical situations.
  • Ability to compare results to specifications and determine if result meets requirements.
  • Must have good problem solving skills.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions.
  • Excellent time management, meeting deadlines, attention to detail, verbal and written communication skills, listening, decision-making, troubleshooting/problem solving and organization skills required.
  • Must possess strong organizational skills, be a self-starter and able to handle multiple tasks.
  • Must possess professional attitude and be able to work well with peers and management.
  • Ability to use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms to properly handle and prepare samples and materials in the lab as needed.
  • Regularly required to handle testing equipment, raw materials and finished product, tools, or controls and communicate in person and on the telephone.
  • Repetitive proper handling and manipulation of the tools, instruments and materials during required procedures in preparation of samples are frequently required.
  • Computer keyboard and mouse usage is frequently required.
  • Frequently required to use sense of taste and smell; to reach overhead; stand; to lift boxes to 36 inches; lift 30 lbs. from floor to 36 inches; lift 20 lbs. from 36 inches, carry 30 ft. and return to 36 inches (i.e. carry boxes).
  • Occasionally required to move from place to place within the facility, to climb, balance, or stoop.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and color vision.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts routine microbiological analyses, reads and interprets results under guidance of Microbiology Lab Supervisor.
  • Tests materials as assigned by priority listing provided daily by QC management.
  • Records, evaluates data and review documentation for completeness.
  • Operates the following types of equipment: pH meter, autoclave, incubators, Soleris, colony counter, microscope, molecular detection systems, ATP devices, swab kits, filtration testing equipment, water activity meters, electronic balances, centrifuges, stomacher, electronic pipettes, and ELISA kits.
  • Independently sets up and tests products as written.
  • Complies with safety and GMP requirements.
  • Supports a culture of safe production and operations; follows all safety rules and procedures.
  • Actively participates in the safety program by engaging in training activities to learn what constitutes a safety hazard; reporting safety concerns to the supervisor, submitting safety suggestions, and correcting or reporting to the appropriate people when an employee sees a workplace health or safety hazard, until it is resolved.
  • Assists with communicating safety information to new employees.
  • Fulfills responsibilities as outlined in the company safety management plan.
