QA Engineer - Mortgage

LoancrateLos Angeles, CA
Remote

About The Position

Loancrate is building AI-native tooling to automate mortgage workflows, aiming for fully automated origination to save lenders significant operating expenses. Since 2020, their remote team has powered over $85 billion in new home loans. They emphasize collaboration, open communication, and having fun while building. The ideal candidate enjoys diving deep quickly. This role is crucial for ensuring the mortgage origination software functions correctly for lenders, covering all screens, workflows, and edge cases before customers encounter them. The QA Engineer will become an expert in the product from a lender's perspective, identifying bugs, regressions, data inconsistencies, and edge cases. This is a foundational position as the first dedicated QA person, embedded with Engineering and Product. There is a significant opportunity to lead the QA function, including hiring and training, as the company scales. This role is for individuals with experience in or alongside loan origination software who want to contribute to building a product rather than just processing files.

Requirements

  • Mortgage operations experience (processing, underwriting, closing, post-closing, QC, or similar), including understanding of the 1003 form and ability to identify discrepancies between on-screen information and loan file data.
  • Hands-on experience with a loan origination system (e.g., Encompass, Empower, Byte).
  • QA or software testing experience, including manual test design, exploratory testing, regression suites, and release verification.
  • Willingness to write and maintain simple test automation scripts (e.g., Playwright, Cypress, Selenium) or ability to learn quickly.
  • Genuine attention to detail and a methodical approach to identifying subtle errors.
  • Clear written communication skills for writing precise and easy-to-follow bug reports, test plans, and checklists.
  • Comfort with structured data and developer tools, such as reading JSON, inspecting API responses, using browser developer tools, and navigating logs.
  • Process-oriented thinking, with a natural inclination to systematize bug detection.
  • Curiosity about AI and its impact on mortgage workflows.
  • Prior experience in team leadership, training, or developing QA programs/SOPs is a plus.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a regulated or financial software environment.
  • Prior team lead, training, or SOP-writing experience.

Responsibilities

  • Test UIs and workflows end-to-end, running real loan scenarios through the product as a processor, underwriter, or closer would, across various loan types and document conditions.
  • Identify bugs, including visual glitches, broken validations, workflow dead-ends, incorrect calculations, data persistence issues, integration field drops, and edge cases specific to real mortgage conditions, before they reach customers.
  • Write clear, reproducible bug reports with exact steps, loan scenario details, expected vs. actual behavior, and supporting visuals (screenshots or recordings).
  • Build and maintain the regression test suite, comprising manual test cases and lightweight automated scripts (e.g., Playwright, Cypress).
  • Own release readiness by performing pre-release verification on significant changes and providing sign-off or flagging issues.
  • Collaborate directly with Engineering and Product teams, participating in design reviews, asking clarifying questions early, and contributing to feature design for testability and correctness.
  • Define the QA playbook, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), bug severity rubrics, release checklists, and quality metrics.
  • Hire, train, and lead the QA team, with the potential to manage the function and set quality standards within 12-18 months.

Benefits

  • Robust medical coverage (100% of employee + family premiums covered)
  • Vision & dental coverage
  • 401(k)
  • HSA / FSA
  • Access to lender partner's employee loan program
  • Remote-first culture
