About The Position

Ashby is seeking a QA Engineer to join their team and contribute to the quality of their product. The QA Engineer will be responsible for testing and strengthening the product's quality, with a focus on building quality into the system rather than layering it on top. This role involves providing fast and useful feedback that engineers trust and identifying problems users would actually notice. The QA Engineer will work alongside engineers, taking ownership of their work and acting as another set of eyes on a fast-evolving product. The role requires deciding what to test, when to test, and which product areas are worth automating. The work is mixed, with approximately 70% dedicated to hands-on manual testing, including working with engineers on features, reproducing customer-reported bugs, and coordinating testing for larger launches. The remaining 30% is focused on automation, specifically writing Playwright end-to-end tests and expanding test coverage. While not requiring prior SDET experience or framework building, comfort with writing and reading code is essential, with a preference for those who have written E2E tests and wish to expand their skills. Requirements

• Strong product instincts; test like a user and understand the difference between 'it works' and 'it works the way someone would actually use it'.
• Ability to reproduce bugs effectively, narrowing them down without filing vague reports.
• Self-sufficient and capable of scoping own work, deciding what's worth testing and when to ask for help.
• Desire to grow on the automation side, interested in writing more tests and learning from engineers.
• Clear and concise writing skills.
• Comfortable writing code.
• Comfortable reading someone else's code.
• Experience writing some E2E tests.
• Understanding of how customers actually use the product.

Responsibilities

• Decide what to test, when to test, and which product areas are worth automating.
• Perform hands-on manual testing of features as they ship.
