About The Position

The Principal Scientist for Analytical Chemistry is an enterprise-level scientific leadership role within Quality Assurance, responsible for setting analytical chemistry strategy, advancing technical capability, and leading chemistry focused initiatives across a network of world-class brewery and laboratory operations. This role includes expectations of combining deep expertise in chromatography systems, multivariate data analysis, and advanced beverage and raw material techniques with cross-site collaboration, method governance, technical problem solving, and strategic influence to support informed product and process quality decisions. The Principal Scientist will ensure analytical methods, data analyses, and scientific standards are aligned and congruent across enterprise facilitates. Product quality, innovation, supplier collaborations, and continuous improvement models for analytical teams are forefront for the position, which serves as the technical authority for analytical chemistry across enterprise. This position leads in the optimization of laboratory methods to drive consistency between users and labs, ensures instrumentation and techniques are modernized and develops/validates complex methods for implementation across multiple sites.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or closely related scientific discipline required
  • 12 years of progressive experience in analytical chemistry or quality laboratory operations, preferably within the scope of food, beverage, brewing or brewing ingredients
  • Expert working knowledge of disciplines related to assignment (e.g., Analytical Chemistry and/or Quality systems)
  • Well respected and recognized by peers in the industry as an expert in their field
  • Ability to exercise initiative and judgment as well as make decisions within the scope of assigned authority
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, deploy and improve assigned processes to industry leading standards
  • Developed communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex data clearly
  • Recognized technical and maintenance expertise, with GC/MS, GC-µECD, UHPLC, ICP, and related analytical platforms, including their applications to complex brewing, beverage, and ingredient matrices
  • Proficient with instrument software: MassHunter, Open Lab, ICP expert preferred
  • Strong skill set in method development, validation, calibration and instrument maintenance

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement innovative/advanced methods for assigned areas including all supporting mechanisms (e.g., SOPs, training documentation/aids, tools, instrumentation, logs, databases, control charts, etc.)
  • Apply advanced methods (e.g., Design of Experiments) and/or specialized skills and knowledge to solve complex problems and/or make improvements to products and processes
  • Mentor and trains others including NBB employees, customers, suppliers and/or industry professionals in area(s) of technical expertise
  • Evaluate/troubleshoot laboratory methods/instrumentation
  • Leads major project and/or focused improvement team efforts
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership on decisions concerning product quality, corrective actions, and product disposition.
  • Participate in industry collaborative and external comparisons to validate NBB test methods
  • Partner with instrument suppliers, external laboratories, universities, and technical organizations to evaluate, implement, and sustain advanced analytical technologies and scientific capabilities
  • Lead cross-site technical forums, method transfer activities, proficiency comparisons, and best-practice sharing to ensure consistent execution and comparable results across all laboratories
  • Collaborate closely with Quality Assurance, Production, and R&D teams to support process optimization and new product development projects
  • Stay current with scientific advancements, brewing chemistry trends, regulatory expectations, and analytical technologies; translate external knowledge into practical improvements for brewery laboratories and quality systems
