Python Backend Developer Intern – Energy Flexibility Platform

Siemens•Princeton, NJ
•$28 - $48•Onsite

About The Position

Join Siemens’ Autonomous Control and Operations team in Princeton, New Jersey, for a 3–6 month internship building a new Energy Flexibility Platform. The platform enables Siemens customers to participate in energy markets using power generation and storage assets. As part of a small interdisciplinary team of software engineers, power systems experts, and energy market specialists, you will develop and maintain REST APIs that connect data sources to platform algorithms. The product is in its early stages, and code developed for it will reach real customers. You will gain experience across the engineering lifecycle of a modern cloud product, writing Python services with FastAPI and SQLAlchemy, expanding automated tests, maintaining OpenAPI specifications, and shipping through containerized CI/CD pipelines to AWS. The team values clean, well-tested code and open technical discussion, and senior engineers will support your growth. This is an on-site position in Princeton, NJ, in a dynamic environment at the intersection of software engineering and energy.

  • Basic understanding of OAuth2 / OpenID Connect and JWT-based authentication and role-based authorization.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL, SQLAlchemy, and Alembic database migrations.
  • Experience with time-series databases such as InfluxDB.
  • Experience with pytest, including mocking, Poetry, and API testing tools such as Postman.
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP, especially AWS services such as RDS, Systems Manager Parameter Store, Secrets Manager, and SQS.
  • Exposure to Docker, Kubernetes / Helm, and CI/CD pipelines such as GitLab CI.
  • Coursework or interest in power systems and energy markets.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work in a growing, dynamic, interdisciplinary team of experts.
