About The Position

This is a temporary position with the Department of Transportation - Highways Division. The Purchasing Technician I will independently purchase a wide range of goods, supplies, equipment, and services for the organization using informal purchasing methods. The role also involves performing other related duties as assigned. Hiring rates will be based on the availability of funds, applicant qualifications, and other relevant factors. Employees appointed to temporary positions may become members of the civil service upon satisfactory completion of an initial probation period of at least six months, gaining eligibility for promotion and transfer opportunities, as well as other rights and benefits afforded to permanent positions, with the exception of return and placement rights associated with a reduction-in-force.

Requirements

  • Must meet all minimum qualification requirements.
  • Legal Authorization to Work Requirement: Must be a citizen, national, or permanent resident alien of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
  • Basic Experience: Work experience demonstrating the ability to read, comprehend and apply written directions, and perform basic arithmetic computations, including percentages. This may be met from part-time and/or unpaid work on a continuous basis, or by graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • General Experience: TWO (2) YEARS of responsible work experience demonstrating the ability to request information from others and to explain procedural requirements orally and in writing.
  • General Experience (continued): Must demonstrate knowledge/experience as described under A or B below or a combination of both:
  • A. Experience demonstrating a good working knowledge of governmental purchasing methods, laws, regulations, policies, procedures and requirements. Examples include account clerical or pre-audit work involving examination of documents supporting governmental purchases for validity and accuracy, ensuring proper procedures were followed, and preparation or review/approval of vouchers authorizing payments.
  • B. Experience preparing and submitting requisitions for purchasing, involving gathering information on desired products and alternatives, obtaining price information or quotations, writing requisitions, and demonstrating an understanding of purchasing policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • Possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the requisitioning of goods which did not involve information-gathering and writing as described under General Experience, above, is not qualifying.
  • Experience in the authorization or review of payroll claims is not qualifying.
