Publishing Ethics Specialist

About The Position

Support the resolution of publishing ethics issues such as plagiarism, manipulation of the peer review process, and/or gaming of industry-accepted bibliometrics. IEEE's ethical and conduct processes are complex, detail-oriented, and confidential in nature. The incumbent in this position is primarily responsible for processing reported publishing misconduct through IEEE's centralized Ethics Point System; leading investigations as case manager; and serving as an IEEE's subject matter expert on issues related to plagiarism and violations of the policies described in the PSPB Operations Manual.

  • Must have the ability to apply knowledge and critical thinking skills to finding solutions to day-to-day problems.

  • Ability to relate well with others, build relationships and constructively interact with a variety of staff, volunteers and vendors.
  • Must possess the necessary skills to analyze and interpret business requirements and design appropriate reporting solutions with moderate supervision.
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite products such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Nice To Haves

  • Master's or other advanced degree Physical science or engineering
  • 2-4 years Publishing Experience
  • 2-4 years Experience with research and the scholarly publishing process in an STEM field

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an IEEE Publications' subject matter expert on publishing ethics issues
  • Respond appropriately to all serious allegations of publishing misconduct, while playing a pivotal role as case manager in the handling and resolution of ethics issues.
  • Provide initial review of incoming cases to determine if allegations merit further investigation
  • Keep track of, and report regularly on the overall status of misconduct caseload
  • Explore and support methods of misconduct detection, working with technology and vendor systems to improve the sensitivity and specificity of analytic tools.
  • Maintain up-to-the-minute familiarity with journal and conference peer review processes, publication ethics concepts, and intellectual property law
  • Keep track of reports on misconduct activities related to IEEE Publications, especially from conferences and periodicals.
  • Become involved with external scholarly publishing partners, peers, and industry groups (such as COPE) to maintain active knowledge of current ethics issues and best practices for resolution.
  • Maintain confidential, individual case files
  • Assist and advise Editors-in-Chief in adjudication author appeals of paper rejections and other incidents that may fall outside the publishing ethics domain
  • Stay up-to-date on best practices re: publishing ethics and publishing standards within the STEM community
