About The Position

The City of Buda is hiring for a Public Works Technician position. Placement within the Public Works Technician career progression (I, II, or III) and starting pay will be based on the selected candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and certifications. The Public Works Technician for the Streets division performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, construction, and infrastructure preservation activities to support the City's transportation network, maintain safe travel conditions, protect public assets, and enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors. The Public Works Technician operates equipment, utilizes tools and materials, and performs preventative maintenance activities to maintain streets, sidewalks, alleys, curbs, traffic control devices, and related public infrastructure. This position participates in emergency response operations and may be required to work overtime, weekends, holidays, or on-call assignments as necessary to support City operations and emergency management activities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to obtain a valid Texas driver’s license within 90 days of employment.
  • Must maintain an acceptable driving record and be insurable under the City’s vehicle insurance policy.
  • Knowledge of street maintenance, roadway preservation, and public infrastructure maintenance practices.
  • Knowledge of asphalt, concrete, pavement repair, and construction methods.
  • Knowledge of traffic control standards, work zone safety requirements, and roadway safety practices.
  • Knowledge of equipment, tools, materials, and safety procedures used in public works operations.
  • Knowledge of street sign installation and maintenance practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable City policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of basic recordkeeping and documentation practices.
  • Skill in operating vehicles, trailers, construction equipment, machinery, and tools used in street maintenance and construction activities.
  • Skill in performing asphalt, concrete, pavement, sidewalk, curb, and roadway repairs.
  • Skill in inspecting equipment and performing routine preventative maintenance.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining safe work zones and traffic control measures.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting work orders, maps, sketches, and project information.
  • Skill in communicating professionally and effectively with coworkers, contractors, and the public.
  • Skill in utilizing basic computer software, mobile devices, and electronic work order systems.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to identify infrastructure deficiencies and determine appropriate corrective actions.
  • Ability to prioritize work assignments and adapt to changing operational demands.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, contractors, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations and work extended or irregular hours when necessary.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of a valid Texas Commercial Driver License (CDL) is valued and may enhance an employee's ability to perform a broader range of Public Works operations but is not required for this position.
  • Employees may be requested to obtain and maintain the appropriate CDL to perform specialized assignments or operate designated equipment.
  • Employees who obtain and maintain the appropriate CDL may be eligible for a CDL stipend in accordance with City policy.
  • Employees are encouraged to obtain approved certifications that support Public Works operations. Approved certifications may qualify employees for specialized assignments, advancement within the Public Works Technician career progression, pay adjustments within the established pay range, and certification incentive pay as approved by the City.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains public streets, alleys, sidewalks, curbs, and related infrastructure by performing repairs, preventative maintenance, and construction activities to promote safe and efficient transportation throughout the City.
  • Repairs pavement deficiencies, potholes, curbs, sidewalks, and concrete structures by utilizing appropriate materials, equipment, and construction methods to preserve infrastructure and extend service life.
  • Performs asphalt maintenance activities, including patching, crack sealing, surface repairs, and related roadway preservation efforts to improve roadway conditions and reduce long-term maintenance costs.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains traffic control devices, street signs, pavement markings, and related infrastructure to support traffic safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Inspects streets, sidewalks, alleys, and associated infrastructure to identify maintenance needs, safety hazards, drainage concerns, or deteriorating conditions and support timely corrective action.
  • Performs vegetation management and right-of-way maintenance activities adjacent to streets and transportation corridors to maintain visibility, accessibility, and public safety.
  • Operates vehicles, trailers, construction equipment, power equipment, and hand tools in accordance with established safety procedures to complete maintenance and construction activities efficiently and safely.
  • Establishes and maintains temporary traffic control measures, including signs, barricades, cones, and warning devices, to protect employees, motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians during maintenance and construction activities.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on vehicles, equipment, tools, and machinery by cleaning, inspecting, lubricating, servicing, and reporting deficiencies to maximize operational readiness and equipment lifespan.
  • Maintains work records, equipment logs, inspection reports, maintenance documentation, and electronic work orders to support operational accountability, regulatory compliance, and asset management efforts.
  • Responds to citizen concerns and service requests by evaluating reported street and sidewalk issues, identifying appropriate corrective actions, and providing professional customer service.
  • Assists other Public Works divisions and City departments with maintenance projects, special events, operational needs, and City initiatives to support efficient municipal operations.
  • Participates in emergency response and disaster recovery operations, including traffic control, debris removal, facility protection, sandbagging, emergency repairs, roadway restoration, and other emergency management activities to protect public safety and restore essential services.
  • Complies with all City policies, departmental procedures, safety standards, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations to promote a safe and productive work environment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
