About The Position

Under close supervision, performs various tasks related to the maintenance of City owned roads, facilities, beaches and all areas within the rights-of way, as assigned. Employees in this class are responsible for the performance of manual, unskilled work at the City owned and maintained properties. Supervision is received through superiors who give general direction as to job requirements.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and six (6) months of manual labor, construction, or maintenance related experience to include but not limited to paving work, concrete work, grouting, hardscaping, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • A current and valid Florida driver’s license is required.
  • Valid Driver’s License: With proof of automobile insurance
  • Background Check: Must have an acceptable background record
  • Driving Abstract: Must have an acceptable driving record
  • Basic knowledge of tasks related to maintenance of streets, sidewalks, and all areas within the rights-of-way.
  • Basic knowledge of equipment and tools necessary for the maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, and all areas within the rights-of-way.
  • Basic knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow safety practices and recognize hazards.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools.
  • Ability to follow instructions in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form.
  • Ability to understand and carry out simple oral instructions.
  • Ability to represent the City effectively and positively in delivering and performing work with colleagues and clients, irrespective of gender, race, religion, age, disability, political affiliation or belief, or sexual orientation/gender identity.
  • Ability to maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors, managers and the public.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of manual labor, construction, or maintenance related experience to include but not limited to paving work, concrete work, grouting, and hardscaping.
  • Additional education and experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted for the above requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Performs tasks related to the maintenance of City owned roads, facilities, beaches, and all areas within he rights-of-way as assigned.
  • Performs tasks involving physical labor at construction/maintenance sites.
  • May operate hand and power tool of all types including but not limited to: air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, small mechanical hoists, and a variety of other small equipment associated with the project.
  • May smooth and level surfaces of poured concrete, such as walks, sidewalks, and/or curbs using a variety of hand tools.
  • Aligns and places forms for sidewalks, curbs, or gutters; patches voids; and uses power tools to cut expansion joints and grind uneven edges.
  • Operates a variety of machinery, equipment and tools associated with the assignments and projects.
  • May be required to patch broken or eroded pavement and repair guard rails, and highway markers.
  • May be required to mow or clear brush, which may include but is not limited to any combination of the following: sod laying, mowing, trimming, weeding, planting, watering, fertilizing, digging, raking, sprinkler installation, and installation of mortar less segmental concrete masonry.
  • May be required to collect trash and debris from City maintained properties; loads vehicles with trash and debris; disposes of trash and debris.
  • Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment and tools in operable condition.
  • Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of self, other employees, and individuals.
  • Works collaboratively and effectively with all members of assigned crew to accomplish required working assignments and City projects.
  • Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service or assistance.
  • Must be able and willing to perform all duties of subordinate positions.
  • Performs related work as required for this position description only.
