About The Position

Operate heavy construction equipment and/or tractor-trailer. This position can be assigned to any division as needed in Public Works. The role involves 80% field work, including operating tractor-trailer, heavy and light construction, or road maintenance equipment. The incumbent may have some lead worker responsibilities and is expected to perform advanced level of heavy equipment operations. The position requires the ability to perform work without direction or immediate supervision, follow detailed instructions, communicate verbally through radio, and maintain a courteous and helpful attitude when interacting with the public. Additionally, the role involves assisting in the operation of mining, crushing, and reclamation equipment. The administration component (10%) requires basic computer skills for reporting and recording data, the ability to comprehend instructions and correspondence, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships. The remaining 10% is for other duties as assigned, including availability for extraordinary hours during emergencies and assisting with snow and inclement weather operations.

Requirements

High School Diploma/GED
Two years’ experience operating tractor-trailer and/or heavy equipment operation.
Valid Colorado Class A CDL license with tanker endorsement required or ability to obtain license within specified time frame agreed upon hire.
Ability to be MSHA certified.
Demonstrated proficiency in any two of the following pieces of equipment: tracked hydraulic excavator, snowplow, bulldozer, truck tractor with belly dump, front end loader, lowboy trailer, scraper, aggregate crushing plant, tandem axle truck, tanker, asphalt paver, backhoe (smaller than a John Deere 510), compaction equipment, skid steer, and motor grader.
Basic familiarity with and experience working with a variety of road construction, maintenance and repair equipment and materials.
Ability to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, to respond to official inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.
Ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other PPE as required by County and MSHA.
Must have or be able to obtain MSHA (new miner or experienced miner) certification within first 12 months of employment if not certified upon hire.
Effectively present information in one-on-one situation with the public, subordinates, and supervisors.
Add and subtract two-digit numbers and multiply/divide with 10’s and 100’s. Perform these operations using units of money, weight, measurement, volume and distance.
Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions and make appropriate day to day decisions without supervisory guidance to perform assigned tasks.
Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Candidate must pass a background check prior to employment start date.
Candidate must pass a substance use screening prior to employment start date.
Candidate must pass a physical demands evaluation post offer screen compatible to this position.
