About The Position

The City of Plano's Public Works Department is looking for hardworking and reliable Public Works Maintenance Workers to join our Utility Operations team. These positions play a critical role in maintaining and repairing the City's water distribution and wastewater collection systems that serve our businesses and nearly 300,000 residents. Working under the direction of crew leaders and supervisors, Maintenance Workers assist with preparing job sites, operating tools and equipment, and performing a variety of maintenance and repair tasks to keep essential water and sewer systems operating effectively. The ideal candidate will bring a strong work ethic, a commitment to safety, and an eagerness to learn field operations, including water main repairs, sewer line maintenance, and water meter work. Choose between a four-day, 10-hour workweek (6:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) or a traditional five-day, 8-hour schedule (6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.).

Requirements

  • Knowledge of: Safety practices and procedures; proper and efficient use of hand and power tools; methods of tool and equipment maintenance; traffic control and barricade placement.
  • Skill in: Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; operating light equipment; performing routine construction and repair work; completing basic mathematical calculations and measurements.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Experience: One (1) year of previous maintenance or construction experience preferred.
  • Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Must have a valid Class "C" Driver's License.
  • Must have a valid Driver's License.
  • Three years of previous maintenance or construction experience preferred. Two (2) years of previous maintenance or construction experience required.
  • Must have a valid Class "B" Commercial driver's license.
  • Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.

Responsibilities

  • Assists preparing work areas; and securing job sites by setting up traffic control devices such as cones, barricades and advance warning signs.
  • Prepares tools, materials, and equipment necessary for daily tasks; cleans, inspects, and maintains tools, equipment, and trucks.
  • Complies with all written city policies and procedures
  • Understands how to use basic personal protective equipment
  • Drives to and from work locations as assigned.
  • Inspects job sites and complies with safety procedures.
  • Trained and able to work in confined spaces.
  • Follows the guidance of a crew leader to setup proper trench shoring.
  • Uses tools and handles materials associated with the installation of new water mains, sewer mains, service connections and manholes.
  • Assists with water taps.
  • Locates and repairs sewer mains and manholes.
  • Operates dead end blow off valves for flushing to maintain water quality.
  • Able to assist with locating of water main and service line leaks.
  • Serves on call.
  • Responds to citizen concerns and complaints
  • Proficient in the use of iPad and the department's cloud-based asset management system
  • Able to clear sewer stoppages with limited supervision
  • Able to determine city infrastructure vs private infrastructure
  • Proficient in the installation of proper trench shoring with limited supervision
  • Trains other Maintenance Workers on all aspects of field work and safety
  • Basic understanding of the operation of all maintenance equipment within division
