About The Position

The Public Works Maintenance and Equipment Technician III is the advanced-level position in the Public Works Maintenance and Equipment Technician series. This position performs skilled and complex maintenance, repair, and equipment operation work in support of Town streets, sidewalks, drainage systems, rights-of-way, facilities, utilities support, and other assigned Public Works infrastructure. This position is distinguished from lower-level technicians by the level of technical skill, independent judgment, equipment proficiency, troubleshooting ability, and ability to complete more complex assignments with limited supervision. The Technician III is expected to model safe work practices, complete assigned work accurately and efficiently, identify field issues, and support the overall effectiveness of Public Works maintenance operations.

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, and safety practices used in public works maintenance, construction, repair, and equipment operation.
  • Strong knowledge of street, drainage, facility, utility support, right-of-way, and infrastructure maintenance practices.
  • Skilled in safely operating heavy equipment, vehicles, hand tools, power tools, and specialized maintenance equipment in varied field conditions.
  • Ability to diagnose maintenance issues, troubleshoot operational problems, and recommend practical corrective actions.
  • Ability to read and interpret work orders, maps, basic construction plans, blueprints, safety data sheets, manuals, and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform skilled maintenance and construction tasks with limited supervision.
  • Ability to recognize unsafe conditions, follow safety protocols, and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor in adverse weather, traffic, confined spaces, construction zones, and other field environments.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, residents, and the public.
  • Ability to support a team environment while maintaining accountability for assigned work.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and use basic technology, work order systems, or mobile devices as required.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in public works maintenance, construction, infrastructure repair, equipment operation, or a closely related field required.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment in a public works, construction, utility, road maintenance, or similar field environment required.
  • Valid Colorado Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake and tanker endorsements required at time of appointment.
  • Safe driving record required and must be maintained as a condition of employment.
  • Flagger certification required.
  • Forklift certification required.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional certifications related to equipment operation, traffic control, trenching/excavation, water distribution, stormwater, snow operations, or other public works functions may be required based on assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced maintenance, repair, and preventative maintenance activities for streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, drainage systems, rights-of-way, facilities, utilities support, and other assigned Town infrastructure.
  • Operate heavy equipment, vehicles, power tools, and specialized machinery, including loaders, backhoes, excavators, dump trucks, skid steers, snow removal equipment, and related equipment.
  • Complete complex field assignments requiring sound judgment, technical knowledge, safe work practices, and the ability to determine appropriate tools, equipment, materials, and work methods.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and identify maintenance needs, infrastructure deficiencies, equipment issues, and field conditions requiring repair, replacement, escalation, or follow-up.
  • Perform routine equipment inspections, minor maintenance, cleaning, fueling, and reporting of mechanical concerns or unsafe operating conditions.
  • Support snow and ice control operations, storm response, emergency repairs, special events, and other Town operational needs, including on-call, after-hours, weekend, and holiday assignments as required.
  • Assist with traffic control, excavation, trenching, patching, grading, hauling, drainage maintenance, sign repairs, concrete and asphalt work, and general public works construction and maintenance activities.
  • Follow established safety procedures, traffic control standards, equipment operation practices, and applicable laws, regulations, and Town policies.
  • Properly handle, store, and dispose of materials, chemicals, and debris in accordance with safety and environmental requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, equipment usage, inspections, maintenance activities, and service requests.
  • Assist with inventory tracking, material preparation, site setup, and use of tools, equipment, and supplies needed for assigned work.
  • Provide task-specific technical support or guidance to less experienced employees when appropriate, without assuming supervisory or lead authority.
  • Interact professionally with residents, contractors, vendors, and other departments; respond to questions or concerns and refer matters appropriately when needed.
