About The Position

In this role, you'll help protect the County's underground utility systems by accurately locating and identifying buried traffic signal, roadway lighting, warning beacon, and fiber optic communication lines. Your work plays a vital role in preventing utility damage, supporting construction projects, and ensuring compliance with Florida's Underground Facilities Damage Prevention and Safety Act, Chapter 556, and Florida Statues. You'll respond to both internal and external utility locate requests, providing accurate information to contractors, designers, project managers, consultants, and other stakeholders. You'll maintain detailed records, prepare reports, and document daily activities to support safe excavation and project planning. This position also offers opportunities to assist with the maintenance and repair of traffic signals, roadway lighting, and other traffic control devices. You may occasionally perform light excavation to expose underground utilities, maintain equipment, and support other field operations as needed. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience in locating underground electrical facilities or Electronics or electrical trade including traffic signal installation, maintenance, or repair or Traffic Signal, roadway lighting construction experience.
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Within three (3) months of position assignment: Must maintain Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) certification from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).
  • Strong understanding of underground utility locating practices and the methods, materials, and equipment used to identify buried electrical and telecommunications infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with the construction, maintenance, and repair of traffic signal systems, fiber optic communications, roadway lighting, warning beacons, and related equipment.
  • Understanding of safety practices and regulations that govern this work.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and utility drawings.
  • Skilled in using hand tools and electronic locating equipment, including cable locating systems such as the Vivax/Metrotech vLoc-9800.
  • Comfortable operating motor vehicles, light-duty equipment, and standard office and work order software.
  • Organized and dependable.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, maintain accurate records, and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to recognize hazardous conditions and exercise sound judgment in the field.
  • Prioritize safety.
  • Communicate effectively with coworkers, contractors, consultants, and the public.
  • Provide professional guidance and excellent customer service.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession and maintenance of an International Municipal Signal Associations (IMSA) Level I.
  • International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level II Field or Bench Technician.
