About The Position

The Public Works Labourer II is responsible for performing the daily tasks required to assist in all aspects of outside maintenance operations, which includes: roads, drainage, landscape, cemetery maintenance & projects, snow removal, fleet and grounds maintenance, carpentry, heavy equipment operation as directed. This role performs manual labour duties as part of the department's landscape and infrastructure maintenance activities and to assist fellow crewmembers to ensure economical, cost-effective, and efficient use of resources. The position also involves operation and maintenance of equipment and power tools, performing a variety of maintenance tasks related to roads, bus stops, drainage systems, landscape projects and grounds maintenance, carpentry and new asset construction. The role requires the ability to work flexible hours, including shift work, overtime and emergency call outs, and involves arranging for traffic control, the placement of barricades and warning lights around work projects in high and low traffic situations and adverse weather. The Public Works Labourer II is expected to complete assigned tasks on time and on budget, consider, prioritize and act on the needs of both internal and external Clients, and deliver excellent service and project deliverables. Self-motivation with personal initiative to start and complete projects with pre-approval when required is also a key aspect of this role. The position requires knowledge of plan reading, pipe locating, and map reading (paper and digital). Being part of the rotating on-call schedule is required for this position, which includes responding to after-hour calls within a 20-minute response time and taking corrective action as required. All duties and responsibilities are to be performed in accordance with the Westbank First Nation laws, policies, standards and procedures and as directed by the Supervisor. Other duties as may be required or assigned by a Supervisor will also be part of the role. The role also has a strong Health and Safety (HSE) Focus, requiring adherence to the health, safety and environmental program and protocols, and buying into the strict safety culture of the industry. This includes setting positive examples relative to the HSE program and protocols, demonstrating a sound understanding of hazard identification, assessment and control, and leading hazard assessment processes on projects. Conducting required HSE inspections and audits, ensuring all team members receive adequate safety training, and demonstrating effective basic investigative and reporting skills are also key. Continuous HSE improvement, clear and consistent communication regarding HSE issues, and appreciation for safe behaviors while coaching those who do not, are expected. In terms of Teamwork, the role involves working with others to achieve shared goals, taking responsibility for individual actions to achieve consistent results, and contributing to team goals and project objectives. Providing adequate guidance, where necessary and directed, providing supervision, and seeking opportunities in leading project teams are also part of the role. Providing feedback, guidance, encouragement and recognition to team members, and the ability to take and follow instruction and input from all levels of the team, as well as the ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues as a team member and independently, are essential. The Business Acumen aspect requires all persons employed by Westbank First Nation to assist the organization in providing emergency services, with duties assigned during an emergency potentially differing from regular duties. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2-3 years experience in a civil or industrial construction and/or maintenance environment
  • 2-3 years experience working with hand tools, power tools and/or heavy equipment
  • Criminal record check with results acceptable to WFN
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and an annual driver’s abstract in excellent standing which is to be submitted annually
  • Successful completion of WFN’s workplace physical demands assessment
  • Knowledge of computer basics (Word and Excel) as well as other electronic devices.
  • Ability to work outside in any type of weather
  • Willingness to work evenings weekends and holidays

Responsibilities

  • Operation and maintenance of equipment and power tools such as skid steer, tractor, mini-excavator, dump truck, tamper, power rake, aerator, top dresser, lawn mower, weed-eater, cement mixer, pressure washer, saws, drills and miscellaneous hand tools.
  • Performs a variety of maintenance tasks related to roads, bus stops, drainage systems, landscape projects and grounds maintenance, carpentry and new asset construction.

  • Performs minor repairs and assists with assembly, removal and adjustments of attachments to various pieces of equipment.
