Under general direction, the purpose of this position is to plan, organize, oversee and personally participate in providing public works inspection services, such as projects related to grading, permits, subdivisions, pavement management utilities and capital improvements; perform complex inspections in support of the Public Works Director/City Engineer; prepare a variety of operational, statistical, and activity reports; ensure that all federal, state and local regulatory requirements and plans, specifications, and departmental regulations are met; supervise, train and evaluate assigned staff, if any; and perform related work as required. The Public Works Inspector reviews engineering plans and specifications and conducts field inspections of private and public construction projects. The Public Works Inspector is distinguished from the Senior Public Works Inspector, who performs more varied and complex, specialized, and large-scale inspections. The Senior Public Works Inspector is distinguished form the Public Works Inspector in that it performs a greater range of specialized inspections, including larger scale development projects and more specialized grading inspections, and possess more professional experience in the related field. Appointment will be made at the Public Works Inspector or Senior Public Works Inspector level depending on experience and qualifications at the City's discretion. A Public Works Inspector may be promoted to a Senior Public Works Inspector upon meeting the minimum qualifications for the position and recommendation of the Department Head and approval by the City Manager.
