About The Position

Douglas County Public Works has full-time positions available with a competitive full-family benefit package. This position offers PERS/OPSRP retirement and availability of deferred compensation retirement savings. Onsite (Courthouse complex) childcare is available at a discounted employee rate through Roseburg Professional Childcare (Fowler St. location only), subject to center waitlist. This position is eligible for representation by the TEAMSTERS LOCAL UNION No. 223.

Requirements

  • Two years experience in bridge maintenance and construction or operation of heavy road maintenance equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of equipment, materials, practices and procedures used in maintenance and construction of wooden, steel and concrete bridges.
  • Considerable knowledge of finish to rough carpentry.
  • Considerable knowledge of minor repair of equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of safety procedures.
  • Reasonable knowledge of the traffic laws and safety rules governing operations of motor vehicles and equipment on public roads.
  • Skill in performing specialized work.
  • Skill in performing maintenance on equipment.
  • Skill in safe operation of vehicles, equipment and tools used in area of responsibility.
  • Skill in safe operation of equipment under adverse conditions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.
  • Ability to work from plans, specifications and reinforcing steel details.
  • Ability to estimate time and materials and manage time efficiently.
  • Ability to make decisions independently in accordance with established policies and use initiative and judgment in carrying out tasks and responsibilities.
  • Ability to utilize problem identification and resolution techniques.
  • Ability to remain calm and use good judgment during confrontational or high pressure situations.
  • Ability to courteously meet and deal effectively with other employees, contractors, vendors and the public.
  • Must possess a valid Oregon Class A commercial driver's license with tank and air brake endorsements at time of appointment.
  • Regular and consistent attendance.

Responsibilities

  • Performs duties associated with bridge construction and maintenance.
  • Operates and performs routine maintenance on bridge equipment.
  • Performs manual tasks.
  • Builds forms for concrete abutments, piers, decks and slabs; assists in pouring, vibrating and finishing concrete.
  • Cuts, bends and places metal reinforcement.
  • Builds a wide variety of items utilizing finish to rough carpentry skills, such as office workstations and related furniture to storage sheds and buildings.
  • Operates medium to heavy sized equipment, such as boom trucks, flatbed trucks, compressors and related bridge equipment.
  • May, on an infrequent basis, operate other road maintenance equipment.
  • Loads and safely transports equipment and materials.
  • Performs pre-trip inspections.
  • Performs repair on assigned equipment, including minor maintenance and servicing.
