About The Position

The Public Safety Dispatcher answers Public Safety emergency and non-emergency calls, and College switchboard calls. The Public Safety Dispatcher reports to the Operations Manager. This role is responsible for performing dispatch and switchboard duties during the day, ensuring all calls are answered and Public Safety radio traffic is monitored. Duties include answering Public Safety and College switchboard calls, dispatching Public Safety Officers, acting as a liaison between officers and callers, entering calls into ARMS, monitoring officer activity, providing directory information, transferring calls, and representing the college professionally. The dispatcher will also instruct callers on proper emergency responses, gather information for efficient dispatch, take messages, operate a base radio system, and manage the Proximity access control system by enabling/disabling doors and creating/replacing electronic key cards.

Requirements

  • One year related experience or training.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to articulate and convey information in a clear concise manner.
  • Computer literate within basic tools including Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to understand and speak the English language.
  • Ability to learn and apply new information and instruction quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to organize information and files.
  • Two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Computer literate with Microsoft Office package and basic user friendly software programs.

Responsibilities

  • Perform dispatch and switchboard duties during the day.
  • Ensure all calls are answered and Public Safety radio traffic is monitored.
  • Answer Public Safety phone calls, monitoring emergency lines and other office lines.
  • Dispatch Public Safety Officers to a variety of calls for service.
  • Act as a liaison between officers and the caller.
  • Enter calls into ARMS (Automated Records Management System) and monitor officer activity.
  • Answer College switchboard calls, assisting with directory information and transferring calls.
  • Assist callers with directory information and transfer calls as necessary.
  • Provide general campus information representing the college in a professional and friendly manner.
  • Instruct callers with proper responses to various emergency situations.
  • Provide a calm, professional and reassuring voice for potentially upset callers.
  • Gather relevant information in order to efficiently dispatch officers.
  • Take messages for Public Safety personnel.
  • Operate a base radio system communicating information to officers.
  • Record all calls dispatched into ARMS (Automated Records Management System).
  • Monitor officer activity and periodically check officer status.
  • Be familiar with Proximity access control system including Enabling/Disabling doors.
  • Create and replace Programs electronic keyID cards for students, employees and visitors.
  • Monitor doors on proximity access control system.
  • Receive Work Orders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
