About The Position

Under the general supervision of a Sergeant or Corporal, a Public Safety Service Officer is a non-sworn position that assists sworn personnel by handling support responsibilities in the Marshal’s Office. This role performs related duties as required. A Public Safety Service Officer I is a nonsworn classification that performs a wide variety of law enforcement support tasks, which do not require the exercise of peace officer powers of arrest or firearms. Initially, a Public Safety Service Officer I works under close supervision performing a variety of general clerical and administrative duties associated with the Marshal’s Office. As a Public Safety Service Officer I develops knowledge and proficiency, a wider variety of duties are assigned and they are allowed to work more independently. Public Safety Service Officers are paraprofessional civilian personnel utilized to augment sworn members in the performance of their primary custody/enforcement responsibilities. Positions in this classification are distinguished from the Deputy Marshal by the lack of direct responsibility for physical restraint of prisoners and protecting life and property.

Requirements

• Completion of 15 college semester units in criminal justice is desirable and can substitute for work experience.
• A minimum of one (1) year of experience in public contact work or general clerical work
• Public information and communication techniques
• Customer service skills
• General clerical office procedures, including typing
• Automated systems as used in information storage and document preparation
• Basic recordkeeping practices.
• Deal tactfully and courteously with the public
• Perform clerical work and make simple arithmetical calculations
• Learn to operate a computer terminal
• Work effectively under pressure with frequent interruptions
• Exercise good judgment in making decisions according to existing statues, rules, regulations, and policies
• Use discretion and mature judgment in the handling of sensitive and confidential information
• Establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with other employees
• Complete weapons screening training.

Responsibilities

• Maintains building security; screens for potential weapons at entry to the courthouse; visually inspects belongings of individuals for explosives and weapons using x-ray machine; ensures persons entering do not possess weapons; secures and maintains control of items not permitted in the courthouse; assists sworn officers with inspection of building prior to opening and closing of building; and conducts perimeter searches.
• Assists sworn staff in compiling information for threat assessments on individuals attending Court; monitors security equipment and alarms.
• Maintains a variety of logs/databases as needed; prepares various reports; prepares warrants for service; maintains courtroom statistics; conducts inventory and maintains inventory records; performs general office, clerical, and administrative duties.
• Provides assistance in the courtroom and performs court attendant duties (e.g., taking fingerprints, checking in parties, preparing paperwork, calling court to order, assisting with the jury process, etc.) as needed.
• Operates holding facility for in-custody inmates by monitoring and viewing the inmates every 15 minutes while in the facility; monitors cameras and speakers; opens and closes security doors for inmates.
• Assists in training other employees, and perform other duties as assigned.
