About The Position

A Public Safety Sergeant is responsible for ensuring a safe learning and working environment, providing leadership and support to Public Safety Officers, and fostering a collaborative relationship with the campus community. The Public Safety Sergeant shall complete the Department of Safety, Security and Emergency and Preparedness (DSSEP) Public Safety Academy if the applicant has not previously completed the Academy as a Broward College Public Safety Officer. Consideration will be given to candidates if the academy program was not completed due to limitations in class size, attendance, and availability. However, the appointed Public Safety Sergeant will still be required to complete the Broward College Public Safety Academy the next time the Academy is offered. This position allows eligible veterans and their spouses to claim Veterans’ Preference pursuant to Florida Statute 295. Certain service members may be eligible to receive waivers for postsecondary educational requirements, in the employment by the state and its political subdivisions and are encouraged to apply for the positions being filled. Applicants claiming preference are responsible for providing required documentation at the time of submitting application.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of four years prior experience in public safety or related field of work required.
  • Must be able to successfully obtain CPR with AED certification within six (6) months of the initial hire date.
  • A valid (unexpired) Florida Class D Security Officer License or active law enforcement certification is required.
  • A valid Florida Driver’s License is a requirement for this position.
  • Basic knowledge of campus public safety, law enforcement, and fire/life safety techniques.
  • Basic knowledge of criminal and civil law, FERPA, and the Clery Act.
  • Knowledge of current technologies, including computers, mobile applications, camera systems, and access control systems.
  • Communication skills: written - report writing, verbal - radio communications, active listening, critical thinking, leadership and management, cognitive empathy, and teaching/coaching.

Nice To Haves

  • An associate degree or sixty (60) college credit hours preferred.
  • Prior experience in campus public safety/law enforcement preferred.
  • Prior supervisory experience in public safety/law enforcement or related field of work preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that DSSEP personnel support and understand the College's and the department's mission and work collaboratively, internally and externally, to achieve organizational goals.
  • Coaching and mentoring staff
  • Uniform inspections
  • Performance appraisals
  • Holding staff accountable for the competent performance of duties and responsibilities
  • Oversee functional administrative tasks within the department, including but not limited to: Assisting with the coordination of officer schedules.
  • Reviewing officer paperwork (incident reports, daily logs, etc.) and providing corrective feedback and guidance as needed.
  • Assisting in investigations and related follow-up activities.
  • Participating in the hiring of new officers.
  • Perform a variety of internal and external communication tasks such as: Conducting daily roll calls, ensuring staff is present and informed of daily announcements and updates.
  • Departmental training on equipment, specific tools, or software the department uses.
  • Presenting to community groups, including students, faculty, and staff.
  • Representation of the department at various meetings, both internal and external.
  • Courtroom testimony as required.
  • Providing support to the community as an officer.
