About The Position

The Public Safety Officer, PT position at Northampton Community College involves providing safety services for the college community, including the protection of students, staff, college facilities, and property. The role requires a highly visible armed presence, adherence to strict certifications, and exceptional customer service. Officers will assist with information dissemination, respond to inquiries, conduct investigations, monitor safety hazards, prepare reports, and maintain campus safety. Responsibilities also include enforcing parking regulations, responding to emergencies, ensuring legal compliance, handling college funds, delivering presentations, and patrolling campus on foot, in a vehicle, or on a bicycle. This position requires flexible hours, including weekends, with up to 28 hours per week available.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • PA State Act 235 Certification (Firearms) required.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Completion and annual renewal CPR/ AED certification
  • Strong organizational, communicative and leadership skills
  • Ability to summarize information and prepare reports
  • Computer literate
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds and climb several flights of stairs
  • Ability to walk and stand for several hours at a time
  • Ability to execute multiple tasks and assignments
  • Ability to function in a crisis situation
  • Able to understand and carry out written, e-mailed or verbal instruction
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to successfully pass all initial certifications and yearly re-certifications in firearms, Tasers, handcuffing, OC and baton
  • Ability to successfully pass both a Drug and Psychological Screening.
  • Minimum two years public safety, law enforcement or other related experience and/or training required.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a highly visible armed presence on campus.
  • Complete all necessary certifications and yearly re-certifications in firearms, Tasers, handcuffing, OC and baton.
  • Provides an exceptional level of professionalism and customer service
  • Assists immediate supervisor with dissemination of information to all officers.
  • Provides direction and responds clearly to questions from students, staff and visitors
  • Conducts follow-up investigations and collaborates with Student Affairs staff members to address student conduct concerns.
  • Monitors crime and safety hazards and follows the reporting procedure for same.
  • Prepares incident reports and maintains accurate records.
  • Have knowledge of crisis plans, alarms, and computer center systems.
  • Maintains a safe environment for vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
  • Enforces campus vehicle parking regulations, assists with jump starts and vehicle lock-outs.
  • Allows access to campus facilities for authorized individuals.
  • Acts as a first responder for campus emergencies, including critical incidents, fire, medical, bomb threats and crises intervention.
  • Maintains institutional compliance with all Federal, State and Local laws as well as college policies and procedures.
  • Receives, transports and deposits college funds appropriately.
  • Delivers presentations and training on a wide variety of topics to the campus community upon request.
  • Patrol campus on foot, in a vehicle and on bicycle when necessary.
