About The Position

Under the immediate direction of the Manager and/or Supervisor of Security & Public Safety, provides protective services to the South Shore Hospital community in a professional and supportive manner. Performs a variety of security and safety related functions focusing on the protection of patients, visitors, employees, medical staff, volunteers and Hospital assets.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 6 months healthcare security and public safety experience required, preferably in an acute care hospital environment.
  • MA Drivers (or CDL)
  • Verification of an acceptable motor vehicle driving record, at time of hire, with annual verification required thereafter.
  • Knowledge of community policing, risk analysis and crime prevention concepts and practices.
  • Strong problem solving, critical and analytical thinking, good judgment with creative resolutions for positive outcomes.
  • Ability to deal with and deescalate anxious/stressed people and manage aggression.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; positive image, tact and diplomacy required.
  • Demonstrates results-oriented behavior.
  • Able to recognize, acknowledge, respect and effectively interact with people of different ages and cultures; establish positive relationships; gain trust and respect of others.
  • Work effectively both independently and in teams.
  • Basic computer skills; use of access control, database software and communications equipment.
  • Strong writing skills to provide and maintain documentation to support data.
  • Aware of and adheres to safety measures for both patient and staff.
  • Must be able to lift people/equipment, sit, walk and/or stand for extended periods of time and withstand adverse weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts proactive patrols of the Hospital campus, including parking lots and satellite buildings, identifying security vulnerabilities, safety hazards, and policy violations. Inspects perimeter doors, offices, patient care areas, and satellite buildings to ensure security. Provides escorts to patients, visitors, and staff. Enforces Hospital smoking policy. Ensures employees and visitors have visible identification badges and challenges those without. Identifies and follows up on unauthorized or suspicious individuals. Provides directions and answers questions courteously. Ensures satellite building burglar alarm systems are armed. Patrols parking lots during shift changes and as needed.
  • Provides access control by granting access to authorized staff and restricting access to unauthorized individuals. Documents access control activities. Ensures the access control system operates as designed. Secures lobby areas after visiting hours. Able to activate Hospital lock-down upon order. Inspects materials leaving the Hospital.
  • Responds to emergent situations involving escalating and violent patients, visitors, and others. Assumes command and control, removes potential weapons, and uses de-escalation techniques. Maintains proficiency in restraining patients. Communicates positively and therapeutically with patients and families post-incident. Performs one-on-one patient observation as requested. Documents occurrences.
  • Responds immediately and appropriately to all emergencies and disaster situations, including Code Red, Code Adam, Code Disaster Alert, Code Disaster Internal, Code Disaster External, Code Blue, Code Yellow, Code Brown, Code Silver, medical emergencies in non-patient care areas, panic alarm activations, and building burglar alarms. Completes incident reports.
  • Performs service-related duties including responding promptly to calls, collecting and securing patient valuables, responding to morgue assistance calls, assisting nursing staff with patient lifts, delivering supplies, assisting with disabled vehicles, assisting Patient Transport staff, providing courier service, returning valet cars, and assisting patients and visitors locate lost vehicles.
  • Monitors the Hospital parking program, enforcing policies fairly and equitably. Assures only authorized vehicles have access and documents violations. Responds to parking complaints and takes steps to resolve them. Patrols parking lots and answers parking questions accurately.
  • Utilizes technology for work processes, including monitoring access control and video surveillance systems, responding to infant protection system activations, producing Hospital identification badges, reporting system malfunctions, and accessing motor vehicle registration data.
  • Conducts initial investigations by responding to incident scenes, securing the scene, requesting assistance if needed, receiving statements, photographing scenes and evidence, securing potential evidence, and completing initial incident reports.
  • Completes incident reports and other required documentation objectively, accurately, clearly, chronologically, and concisely, including quotations and identification of all individuals involved. Answers the questions: What, Where, When, How, and Why. Completes reports in the IRIMS database and other reports as directed.
  • Coordinates snow removal efforts and responds to other weather-related emergencies. Monitors snowfall, contacts vendors, coordinates snow removal, monitors vendor services, assists with disabled vehicles, transports employees if authorized, shovels and treats sidewalks, and responds to other weather-related emergencies.
  • Fosters a "Culture of Safety" through personal ownership and commitment. Attends safety training, uses personal protective equipment, employs proper body mechanics, adheres to respiratory etiquette, maintains an organized work environment, and operates department vehicles safely.
