Requirements

  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Prior public safety/security experience.
  • Three years of supervisory experience or prior law enforcement/public safety experience.
  • Possess or obtain CPR and basic first aid certificates within the first 90 days of employment.
  • Possess a valid Class C California driver's license and a good driving record.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written skills, including a pleasant disposition and an ability to communicate with diplomacy and tact in sensitive situations.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and work independently.
  • Ability to handle multiple, simultaneous responsibilities in potentially stressful situations.
  • Ability to work a wide variety of shifts, including potential late-night/early-morning hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to work extended shifts on short notice or shifts outside of regular scheduled hours.
  • Ability to enter data into various computer software programs.
  • Thorough knowledge of law enforcement and public safety methods.
  • General knowledge of local, state, and federal laws, including the California Vehicle Code.
  • Knowledge of investigative techniques.
  • Ability to supervise others.
  • Ability to assist in fire fighting and rescue operations.

Nice To Haves

  • Two or more years of college.
  • Completion of P.O.S.T. Basic Modular Course Level III, Level II, and Level I; or P.O.S.T. Basic Academy; or P.O.S.T. Modules A, B, C, and D; or appointed as a Level One Reserve Officer prior to January 1, 1997.
  • Hazardous Materials First Responder certification or higher.
  • Past or present affiliation with Pepperdine University.

Responsibilities

  • Handle assigned shift administrative duties, including but not limited to conducting shift briefings, providing mentorship and training, and writing reports.
  • Provide leadership and daily supervision to all on-duty shift personnel.
  • Ensure successful completion of building security checks, foot/vehicle patrols, officer report writing, parking enforcement, fleet management (including vehicle check-off sheets), key control, daily briefing meetings, officer activity logs, scheduling, service requests, trainings, crime prevention education, and other duties assigned to officers.
  • Serve as Incident Commander in emergency situations and/or Event Supervisor as needed.
  • Proactively make recommendations to reduce or eliminate unsafe conditions and decrease the University's theft and damage.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with the community.
  • Identify safety hazards and report them according to appropriate training and protocol.
  • Ensure buildings and offices are locked and secure as appropriate, and monitor and respond to building alarms.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Public Safety leadership.
