About The Position

The Huntsville-Madison County Airport Authority is accepting applications for the position of Public Safety Dispatcher. Duties include operating multiple technology systems such as the multi-channel radio system, fire/life safety control system, access control system/badging software, automated emergency notification system, records management system, video management software, public address system, TTY/TDD and multi-line phone systems to disseminate information to appropriate personnel. Position is responsible for maintaining communication throughout emergency situations, including with field units and callers, local emergency and law enforcement departments, airport personnel, and air traffic control (ATC) tower. Activates the emergency recall plan when required.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 19 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to be certified by the Alabama Department of Public Safety in National Crime Information Center (NCIC) operations within 6 months of employment and recertify every 2 years.
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License.
  • Must possess National Crime Information Center (NCIC) operations certification or obtain same certification within 6 months of employment and recertify every two years.
  • Must complete the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) Public Safety Telecommunicator course within 6 months.
  • Knowledge of emergency communications principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of emergency dispatch procedures.
  • Knowledge of radio and telecommunications equipment.
  • Knowledge of ACJIC/NCIC policies and procedures.
  • Skill in the use of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.
  • Knowledge of local geography, street names, and municipal boundaries.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to coordinate communications quickly and effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using the airport authority's radio channels.
  • Ability to speak clearly and concisely on the radio.
  • Ability to listen effectively.
  • Ability to remain calm in emergencies.
  • Ability to make sound judgements under stressful conditions.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Nice To Haves

  • Two-Year Associates' Degree or Four-Year Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university.
  • Previous dispatch experience.
  • Bi-lingual skills.
