About The Position

The City of Torrance is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Public Safety Communications Supervisor to oversee the daily operations of its 24/7 Public Safety Communications Center. This position supervises Public Safety Dispatchers and 911 Operators; provides guidance on complex operational issues, coordinates staffing and schedules; and serves as a working supervisor by performing dispatch and call-taking duties as needed. The incumbent is responsible for developing and administering training programs; ensuring compliance with certification requirements; and maintaining quality assurance standards for emergency communications operations. The position also researches and implements new technologies and dispatch systems; develops and updates policies and procedures; analyzes operational data to improve service delivery; and serves as a liaison with public safety departments and partner agencies. Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED
  • Three (3) years' experience in emergency radio dispatching.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C Driver's License.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Public Safety Dispatcher Certificate and Emergency Medical Dispatch certification within one (1) year of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of supervisory or lead work experience is preferred.
  • Experience with CAD is preferred.
  • A high degree of understanding public safety.
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
  • Experience with automation, communication and record management systems, including knowledge of Federal regulations related to public safety communications and criminal history record-keeping.
  • Knowledge of public safety communications principles and practices, including but not limited to modern equipment, techniques, and methods of radio communication.
  • Exceptional oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong skills in team-building, coaching, mentoring staff members.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with management, coworkers, and the public.
