About The Position

Reporting to the Director of Adult Public Programs, the Public Programs Specialist is responsible for working collaboratively with curators and colleagues across the Education department to develop and implement programs and written materials related to exhibitions and the museum’s permanent collection. The Public Programs Specialist will partner with internal departments and colleagues to conceptualize and implement innovative and timely public programming content and logistics to ensure successful events that engage diverse audiences. The candidate will also work closely with other departmental staff and their supervisor to conduct meaningful assessments of public programs, drawing on quantitative data and qualitative feedback from program stakeholders, participants, and attendees. Responsibilities also include providing general administrative support and processing payments to speakers and vendors for the public programs department.

Requirements

Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in programming or arts administration in a museum or comparable cultural institution.
Experience monitoring and tracking budgets.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work with people at multiple levels of the organization.
Effective collaborators.
Thinking creatively and developing innovative strategies to expand engagement and program impact.
Possess knowledge of discipline-specific arts practice, artist communities, and creative resources.
Proficient in Google Workspace and able to learn different procedures, as well as internal databases and software.
Comfortable reporting on/representing work to the larger organization through various formats.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Nice To Haves

Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Art Education, Museum Studies, or a related field is preferred; a combination of relevant education, training, and applicable experience will be considered.

Responsibilities

Develops and implements programs for a general audience, including lectures, artist conversations, symposiums, workshops, series, performances, and related public initiatives in alignment with exhibitions, identified themes, and initiatives of Education and Public Programs at LACMA.
Develops, plans, and monitors program schedules and budgets, in coordination with department supervisors.
Facilitates all logistics involved in the implementation of programs, including but not limited to engaging speakers, securing assets, talent, venue or virtual platform, gathering assets, developing event copy, listing events, and preparing contracts.
Serves as on-site lead during program execution, including greeting and supporting speakers, overseeing vendors, setup, coordinating with visitor services and security, and serving as a visible, visitor-facing presence. Ensures smooth, professional program delivery from setup through breakdown.
Collaborates with internal and external partners, including artists, experts, and institutions, to inform programming content.
Negotiates contracts with experts, artists, partnering institutions, and external vendors participating in public-facing programs.
Develops and reviews written materials for public programs, including program descriptions and other audience-facing content.
Works closely with other departmental staff and supervisors to conduct meaningful assessments of public programs, drawing on quantitative data and qualitative feedback from program stakeholders, participants, and attendees.
