About The Position

This position works as a nurse specialist in the epidemiology department over communicable diseases and assists in other programs such as TB and Hepatitis. The employee is subject to be called upon anytime to help the agency respond to a public health emergency which may include, but is not limited to, outbreak investigations, staffing mass dispensing or immunization clinics, providing disaster relief, or other incidents (man-made or natural and intentional or non-intentional) as they arise, or any public health response requested by the Health Director.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
  • One year of professional nursing experience.
  • A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the N.C. Board of Nursing.
  • Must have or obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Background check and negative drug test are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Individuals employed in a local Health Department without a B.S. Degree which includes a Public Health Nursing rotation or a Master’s in Public Health, will be required to complete an introductory course in principles and practices of public health nursing sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services- Division of Public Health within one year of employment as a condition of continued employment in accordance with Health Services Commission Rule, 10 NCAC 46.0301.

Responsibilities

  • Assess, plan, and coordinate a variety of services and have strong input into administrative and personnel duties and responsibilities.
  • Monitor and maintain all patients with bacterial, vector borne, foodborne, waterborne, and zoonotic diseases.
  • Responsible for Adult Day Health certifications and recertifications.
  • Respond to public health emergencies, including outbreak investigations, staffing mass dispensing or immunization clinics, providing disaster relief, or other incidents.
  • Apply nursing theory, practice, principles, and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs.
  • Apply the principles and practices of public health.
  • Coordinate available resources and organizations as needed.
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee the work of others.
  • Deal tactfully with others and exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions.
  • Work in partnership with patients and other service providers to elicit needed information and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Record accurately services rendered and interpret and explain records, reports, and medical instructions.
  • Utilize adequate computer skills for communication, patient record documentation, and accessing information.
