About The Position

Fishers Health Department (FHD) offers academic internships and practicum opportunities to support the development of future public health professionals. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director, interns may contribute to projects across community health and outreach, environmental health, epidemiology, emergency preparedness, public health nursing, community support, and health education. Each internship is intended to align student interests and academic requirements with departmental priorities. Interns gain practical understanding of local public health operations and FHD’s role in advancing community well-being. Interns may assist with most departmental activities, except those requiring professional licensure or involving highly confidential matters. The role involves working across program areas and may include interacting with the public. Travel to locations such as schools, homes, festivals, businesses, and housing communities is expected. Interns work in person at FHD offices under the direction of assigned program staff. Opportunities are considered on a rolling basis, and applicants are encouraged to email [email protected] to inquire about current openings. The position is temporary and seasonal, with flexible start dates between January 2027 and June 2027 depending on the student’s schedule and availability. It is open to spring 2027 or summer 2027 internships. Hourly pay is $12 for high school interns, $15 for undergraduate interns, and $18 for graduate interns. Professional communication and behavior, accountability to high professional and ethical standards, regular attendance, and punctuality are expected. Work includes regular interaction with employees and the public, and periodic duties may take place outdoors or at locations away from FHD administrative offices. Interns are encouraged to collaborate and help streamline public health processes and procedures.
