About The Position

This Public Health Educator will serve as the South-Central Region Public Health Educator, conducting training programs and activities designed to improve knowledge of HIV and other communicable diseases within facilities. This position will conduct a health education program in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) facilities, participate in the preparation, selection and distribution of health education materials, and consult with and advise departmental, division, and program chiefs and professional personnel on various health problems. In addition, they will plan and conduct a program designed to promote and stimulate interest in health education. The ideal candidate would be self-motivated, task oriented, and organized. Requirements

  • Requires a master’s degree in public health education or related area OR requires certification as a certified health education specialist by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing.
  • Requires one (1) year of professional experience in public health education or related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience working with incarcerated, otherwise detained individuals or persons in re-entry programs.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of professional experience working with or collaborating with an organization and administration of public health information.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of professional experience coordinating and educating individuals and groups with consideration to the behavioral and psychological needs of the audience.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of professional experience in conducting public health education programs.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of professional experience in designing training programs and activities for health education, based on a given curriculum.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience in conducting presentations for professionals, both orally and in writing.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of professional experience in reviewing and/or writing educational materials for use with audiences with differing levels of comprehension.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of professional experience in conducting educational and training evaluations to assess effectiveness of teaching methods.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the South-Central Region Public Health Educator, conducting training programs and activities designed to improve the knowledge of HIV and other communicable diseases within the facilities.
  • Conducts a health education program in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) facilities.
  • Participates in the preparation, selection, and distribution of health education materials such as films, pamphlets, exhibits, periodicals, and reports.
  • Consults with and advises departmental, division, and program chiefs and professional personnel on methods of analyzing various health problems.
  • Plans and conducts a program for a region or project designed to promote and stimulate interest in health education.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
