About The Position

The Transportation Planning and Management Division (TP&M) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City's streets, supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living, working, and doing business in New York City. The Division’s responsibilities include planning, street design, technical analysis, signs, transit development, freight mobility and markings, ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists. TP&M is seeking a motivated candidate to serve as a Public Engagement Specialist for the Public Engagement Group, a critical outreach support team for the TP&M Division. This unit supports Vision Zero safety initiatives cited in the Agency's Strategic Plan and NYC Streets Plan and has been critical to the agency's public engagement strategy. The Ambassadors provide capacity for public input in the development of Street Improvement Projects (SIPs) and supports the explicit goals of Project-Based Outreach and Public Awareness. Duties include developing outreach plans, communicating with the public at large, circulating informational and educational materials, assisting in workshops, conducting targeted education campaigns, staffing events, synthesizing outreach efforts through data analysis and deliverables, and reporting on all relevant project related activities. Surveying will be a large part of the job, with merchant surveys assessing loading and delivery needs along commercial corridors, and intercept surveys capturing data at static positions within a given project area. Typical projects include support for public plazas, bike lane development, Open Streets, busway/ bus lane development, and Citi Bike expansion. This is an opportunity to work with a team dedicated to improving safety, accessibility, and mobility throughout New York City.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
  • New hires must reside in NYC for the first two years of employment.
