About The Position

Kamin Science Center is dedicated to inspiring learning and curiosity by connecting science and technology with everyday life. By making science both relevant and fun, the Science Center’s goal is to increase science literacy in the region and motivate young people to seek careers in science and technology. One of the four Carnegie Museums, the Science Center is Pittsburgh’s premier science exploration destination and the region’s most visited museum, reaching more than 500,000 people annually through its hands-on exhibits, camps, classes, and educational programs. The Public & Community Programs Coordinator supports the Public & Community Programs Manager to coordinate museum programming and internal learning at Kamin Science Center. They are responsible for assisting in the research, development, and implementation of departmental programming that is experienced virtually, onsite, within the Greater Pittsburgh community, or at home. They support Kamin Science Center University and promote other learning opportunities for the internal community. While supporting the Team & Program Development Manager, they will assist in establishing and coordinating external community relationships to expand the Science centers reach and audience diversity. This is a full time, temporary benefits eligible position estimated to run from May 2026 through August 2026.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Position prefers 2 years or more experience involving project management, teaching, program development, community engagement, or similar.
  • Excellent problem-solving, ability to multitask, and decision-making skills.
  • An innate collaborative spirit and desire to work cross-departmentally.
  • Effective communication abilities.
  • Focused attention to detail and developed customer relations attitude and competencies.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office preferred.
  • Work schedule is variable and may require early mornings, evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
  • The position entails periods of sedentary work and some with movement throughout all areas of the museum, museum grounds, and external locations.
  • Requires ability to communicate with staff and external guests in a clear and understandable manner.
  • The following PA Act 153 clearances, or proof of application of clearances, are required beginning employment and as a condition of continued employment: Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check FBI Fingerprint Criminal Background Check Obtaining the required clearances is completed as part of the new hire process.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Public & Community Programs Manager in the research, development, and implementation of departmental programming that is experienced virtually, onsite, within the Greater Pittsburgh community, or at-home.
  • Serve as on-camera or onsite host for departmental programming such as Café Sci, science speaker series, and others.
  • Coordinate delivery of programs with operations department staff and other Science Center personnel to ensure clear communications, scheduling, and successful program delivery.
  • Assist with collaborative programs and strategic initiatives, including the implementation of funding proposals and other departmental initiatives.
  • Cultivate relationships with external organizations, such as colleges and universities, cultural organizations industry, community groups, and others.
  • Leverage these relationships to promote programs and increase attendance and participation, and diversify presentations, presenters and programming.
  • Represent the Science Center in relevant networking opportunities to initiate and maintain partnerships with outside organizations to support the mission of the Science Center.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with other departments within Science Center and with other colleagues within Carnegie Museums to ensure cooperation and efficient use of resources to meet the needs of the whole institution.
  • Collaborate with other department members to help create marketing and promotions for departmental programming and initiatives.
  • Assists the Public & Community Programs Manager in monitoring program budgets to assure fiscal sustainability and overall budget management.
  • Works within project budgets in a fiscally responsible manner to meet financial projections and timelines.
  • Assists the department to develop and execute strategies to removes barriers of participation (financial and others) for visitors and staff.

  • Actively seek professional growth opportunities and keep abreast of new and emerging technologies, techniques, and applications within both the science/technology field and the museum field to grow professionally and to ensure the highest-quality experience for visitors at the Science Center.
  • Act as a champion for the Science Center, promoting and ensuring widespread and accurate knowledge of the mission and activities; demonstrate a commitment to the Science Center’s values at all times.
  • When required, serve as a representative of your department, always championing the Science Center’s mission, and the interests of staff and visitors.
  • At all times, uphold the Kamin Science Center’s Four Keys of Operation: Safety, Courtesy, The Experience, and Efficiency; interact with all colleagues in a professional and respectful manner in accordance with Carnegie Museums Core Competencies and Science Center Community Norms.
  • Demonstrates commitment to inclusion and accessibility efforts at the museum.
  • Work collaboratively with other Science Center departments and/or Carnegie Museum components to eliminate programmatic silos and create a holistic visitor experience.
  • Seek opportunities to participate in cross-departmental working groups that further your job goals and enrich your professional development.
  • Provide “front line” support, as needed, over the course of the year during times of peak visitation (e.g. holidays, special events, STEM competitions, etc.)
  • Maintain departmental responsibilities (timely email, phone, communication; meetings, etc.).
  • Perform other duties as required by your superiors.
