About The Position

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve the peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The New York City Police Department strives to foster a safe and fair city through the strategic deployment of resources, focusing on both crime prevention and addressing quality-of-life concerns while building lasting community relationships. The Critical Incident Stress Management Unit (CISM) mission is to provide ongoing support to members of the service who respond to or are involved in critical incidents. Participants meet with qualified Mental Health Professionals to debrief an incident and receive ongoing support and training in a confidential and supportive environment. The program collects and maintains key program performance/outcome measures/dashboard to inform trauma mitigation, support initiatives, and suicide prevention. The Critical Incident Stress Management Program is a proactive approach in promoting wellness and overall well-being of all members of service. The Health and Wellness Section is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Psychiatrist (City Deputy Medical Director M-3) who will serve as Director, Health and Wellness Section. The selected candidate will have a detailed and intricate role supporting the advancement of the Department’s proactive approach to member wellbeing, with a strong emphasis on prevention, early support, and resilience.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York plus valid Board Certification issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board in an approved medical specialty
  • Four years of medical practice including one year of experience in an administrative or supervisory capacity
  • A combination of education and/or experience equivalent to the above
  • Must have a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York
  • Must have one year of medical practice in an administrative or supervisory capacity

Responsibilities

  • Supervising the work of Psychologists and psychology staff in the Health and Wellness Section
  • Serving as a resource to provide guidance on complex or sensitive matters
  • Providing triage evaluation of social, occupational, emotional, or psychological issues for self-referred employees
  • Conducting wellness checks of individuals involved in a critical incident
  • Providing clinical supportive services including brief counseling, referral, and disposition planning
  • Conducting mental health training to members of the Department
  • Overseeing recruitment and supervision of Health and Wellness Section' clinical psychologists and clinicians, peer counselors and peer support members
  • Providing outreach to NYPD precincts as needed
  • Creating initiative development and draft grant proposals to receive independent funding for these programs
