About The Position

Vancouver Coastal Health is seeking psychiatrists to participate in team-based care for adults who have a diagnosis of major mental illness and experience significant impairment in functioning in the community. The population served includes individuals with a history of psychiatric hospitalizations, unstable housing and/or relationships, difficulties with daily living, concurrent substance use or addiction, high risk for co-occurring medical conditions, refractory treatment history, and risk of harm to self or others. Physicians will approach care by placing the patient at the center, engaging in a team-based approach, providing consultations and longer-term psychiatric care, offering culturally safe and responsive care for Indigenous patients, practicing trauma-informed care, adopting a recovery-oriented approach, including families, and collaborating in the management of concurrent substance use disorders.

Requirements

  • Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) - Mandatory
  • Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC) – Eligible
  • Eligibility or current appointment as clinical faculty with University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine

Nice To Haves

  • A strong knowledge base in psychopharmacology including opioid agonist treatment.
  • Familiarity with behavioral and rehabilitative interventions.
  • A clinical faculty appointment with the University of UBC Faculty of Medicine is highly encouraged.

Responsibilities

  • Provide medical expertise within a team-based care model.
  • Work closely with case managers.
  • Provide psychopharmacology, including opioid agonist treatment.
  • Be familiar with behavioral and rehabilitative interventions.
  • Facilitate continuity of care between hospital and community.
  • Liaise with hospital physicians and staff.
  • Conduct occasional outreach visits in the community.
  • Perform virtual client interactions.
  • Participate in on-call duties as required.
  • Supervise residents and be involved in education initiatives.
