About The Position

The Psychiatrist, in the Psychiatric Emergency Room (CPEP), is responsible for providing diagnostic assessment and crisis intervention for patients brought from the community by Emergency Medical Service and referred from various community mental health services. The Psychiatrist must assess the issue of danger to self or others and the need for inpatient hospitalization for psychiatrically ill and substance abusing patients. The Psychiatrist will also provide part time clinic assessments and evaluations to clinic patients.

Requirements

  • M.D.
  • Minimum one (1) year practicing Psychiatrist experience.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Current knowledge of field and techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to fully utilize OBH's electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position.
  • Current, valid, M.D. license in New York State.
  • Board Certification in Psychiatry, or Board Eligible.
  • Credentialed as a member of the Medical Staff of Interfaith Medical Center.
  • Consistent physical requirements necessary to work in a variety of patient care and office settings.
  • Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.
  • Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Residency in Psychiatry is desirable but not necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Provides diagnostic assessments for each patient through a psychiatric interview, including an assessment of risk of hurting self or others.
  • Determines the required level and type of care for patients with input from other ER staff, including RN and Substance Abuse Counselor.
  • Completes a 39 MHL (One Physician Certification) for inpatient hospitalization against the patient's will when necessary.
  • Evaluates psychiatric, substance abuse, and medical issues, and may request medical consultation from General ER physicians.
  • Collaborates with General ER physicians to determine the safest and most appropriate disposition (inpatient psychiatry, detoxification, or inpatient medical/surgical).
  • Documents findings in the medical record, obtains consent, and provides initial orders for inpatient psychiatric care and detoxification.
  • Provides aftercare referral recommendations if appropriate for patients not requiring inpatient care.
  • Provides emergency psychiatric services for acute psychiatric inpatient service and substance abuse inpatient services during evenings, nights, and weekends.
  • Serves as the administrative presence for the Department of Psychiatry during non-business hours.
  • Provides psychiatric assessment and referral recommendations for children under 18 seeking mental health services, consulting and assisting with obtaining required inpatient mental health services at other facilities.
  • Participates in Psychiatrists meetings and hospital committees as assigned.
  • Collaborates with physicians in medical/surgical areas of the hospital in the management of psychiatric patients.
  • Provides outpatient assessment and treatment to clinic patients, as assigned.
