About The Position

The Psychiatric Worker position at Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is within the Psychiatric Assessment Unit (PAU). This role operates under the direction of the Charge Nurse, providing specific psychiatric assessment and therapeutic care to clients with mental health needs, prioritizing client and family needs. The Psychiatric Assessment Unit at Vancouver General Hospital is a 14-bed short stay unit, designed for clients requiring short-term, intensive treatment to return to their community, with an average length of stay of approximately three days. The PAU team, including Nurses, supports patients with their physical and mental health needs and daily activities, aiming to provide a safe, comforting, caring, and holistic environment for acute psychiatric stabilization.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a recognized degree program in Behavioural Science
  • One year’s recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to deal with others effectively
  • Ability to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
  • Ability to organize work
  • Ability to operate related equipment

Responsibilities

  • Provide specific aspects of psychiatric assessment and therapeutic care to clients with mental health needs
  • Establish client/family needs above all other concerns
  • Contribute to the development, implementation and revision of client care plans
  • Participate in ward rounds/meetings as required
  • Conduct observation rounds to ensure the safety of clients and staff
  • Record and communicate client behaviours
  • Identify the need for intervention
  • Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation according to established protocols
  • Participate in in-service education
  • Respond to general inquiries
  • Transport and accompany clients who are considered unsafe to be alone
  • Assist with admissions
  • Provide personal care to clients when necessary under the direction of nursing staff
