UTHealth Houston's Harris County Psychiatric Center (HCPC) is hiring a Psychiatric Technician to join our behavioral health team on the HCPC 1C Competency Restoration Unit (CRU). This position provides direct patient care and support to adult male patients receiving inpatient psychiatric treatment and competency restoration services. We are seeking compassionate, resilient, and safety-focused individuals who are passionate about behavioral health and committed to maintaining a structured, therapeutic, and recovery-focused environment that promotes patient safety, dignity, and accountability. The HCPC 1C Competency Restoration Unit (CRU) is a 23-bed inpatient psychiatric unit that provides specialized psychiatric care and competency restoration services for adult males involved with the legal system. Patients on the unit require treatment, education, and support to help restore competency, improve understanding of legal proceedings, and enhance their ability to participate in their defense. Working on HCPC 1C is both rewarding and challenging. Team members play a critical role in helping patients achieve psychiatric stabilization while supporting their progress through the competency restoration process. Staff work closely with patients to reinforce treatment goals, encourage accountability, promote recovery, and maintain a safe and structured therapeutic milieu. This fast-paced behavioral health environment emphasizes safety, teamwork, therapeutic engagement, and professional boundaries. Psychiatric Technicians work collaboratively with nurses and the interdisciplinary treatment team to provide patient observation, support therapeutic programming, assist with crisis intervention and de-escalation, and contribute to the overall safety and operation of the unit. The Psychiatric Technician works as part of a multidisciplinary behavioral health team that typically includes: 2 Registered Nurses (RNs) working 12-hour shifts, 4 Psychiatric Technicians, and additional staff support for patient 1:1 observations when clinically indicated and staffing resources allow. This collaborative staffing model supports patient safety, therapeutic engagement, competency restoration programming, communication, and coordinated responses to patient needs and daily unit operations. Team members on HCPC 1C have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of patients while working alongside a dedicated behavioral health team. Successful candidates will thrive in an environment that values professionalism, accountability, compassion, teamwork, and patient-centered care. This role can be physically and emotionally demanding due to the complexity of the patient population and behaviors that may be encountered. Candidates should be prepared to work in a fast-paced behavioral health environment where teamwork, communication, situational awareness, and patient safety are essential to providing high-quality patient care. If you are looking for a meaningful opportunity to support recovery, promote patient safety, and contribute to positive patient outcomes, we encourage you to apply.
