About The Position

We have a new opening for a Psychiatric Technician or LPN/LVN at the Naval Branch Health Clinic in Belle Chasse, LA. The work may include conducting or assisting in treatment and rehabilitation of patients, performing initial basic assessment procedures, identifying mental health and nursing diagnoses, observing and reporting patient progress, conducting group and individual counseling, instituting precautionary measures, assisting patients with daily needs, obtaining vital signs, coordinating with other agencies, explaining mental health services, arranging patient referrals, preparing and maintaining records, and assisting with care for individuals experiencing acute and post-traumatic stress reactions. The employee will provide service in the Psychiatric Clinic at Naval Branch Health Clinic Belle Chasse, New Orleans, LA, as part of a Psychological Health initiative under the Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury (PH and TBI) program. This program aims to address care gaps for prevalent injuries among combatants from the global war on terrorism by ensuring easy, rapid access to PH care and recognizing the unique care coordination and case management requirements for PH and TBI patients.

Requirements

  • Minimum Qualifications for LVN/LPN: Certificate. Graduate from an accredited community college, junior college, college, university, or vocational nursing program approved by the appropriate State agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • One year of practical or vocational nurse experience after graduation.
  • Current, full, active and unrestricted license as a practical or vocational nurse.
  • Possess a current AHA or ARC BLS Healthcare Provider certification.
  • Must possess ability to pass a Government background check/security clearance.
  • Minimum Qualifications for Psychiatric Technician: Certificate. Graduation from an accredited Psychiatric Technician Program; or completion of an equivalent education and experience that meets the requirement of the American Association of Psychiatric Technicians or completion of education and experience as a behavioral science specialist/technician in the United States military and proof of having completed an Armed Forces course involving psychiatric technician training or civilian course from an accredited school in the care of behavioral health patients.
  • One year of recent post-grad practical or vocational nurse experience.
  • Current, full, active and unrestricted license as a practical or vocational nurse from any state.
  • Possess a current AHA or ARC BLS Healthcare Provider certification.
  • Must possess ability to pass a Government background check/security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct or assist in treatment and rehabilitation of patients.
  • Perform initial basic assessment procedures including standardized psychological testing, clinical interviewing, mental status examinations, substance abuse evaluations, and psychological and nursing assessment.
  • Identify mental health and nursing diagnoses, and provide patient education.
  • Observe, monitor, record, and report patient's progress.
  • Conduct or assist in conducting group and individual counseling, therapeutic community, and other related milieu activities.
  • Institute precautionary measures to prevent patient injury or suicide.
  • Assist patients with nutritional, hygiene, and comfort measures.
  • Obtain and record vital signs.
  • Coordinate with other agencies regarding specified care, treatment, prevention, rehabilitation, and administrative functions.
  • Contact military and community agencies to obtain collateral information.
  • Explain and interpret mental health services to patients or others.
  • Assist in, or arrange patient referral to public, private, and military community agencies.
  • Prepare and maintain records and reports pertaining to specialty services.
  • Assist with care of individuals experiencing acute and post-traumatic stress reactions.
  • Prepare and maintain treatment records.
