About The Position

This position is located in Directorate of Nursing, Mental Health IP Ward, Naval Medical Center, San Diego, California. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation. Duties include processing patients for admission by searching belongings for contraband, obtaining inpatient/outpatient records, preparing patient charts with proper forms, and assigning beds. The role involves taking patient vital signs and documenting them in EMR, collecting information from personal interviews, medical records, medical personnel, and other concerned individuals to obtain a thorough clinical history. The assistant will provide assistance, security, and patient comfort, help coordinate activities, and encourage patient participation. Maintaining patient accountability during outdoor activities, meals, and other activities is crucial. The position requires escorting patients safely on and off the unit and understanding patient management procedures for elopement risks.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is required to be screened for and obtain necessary immunizations/vaccinations (hepatitis, influenza, etc.), unless exempted by a licensed physician.
  • This position is required to work uncommon tours of duty hours such as, on-call, working either fixed or rotating shifts, evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
  • This position is designated “Mission Essential”. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent may be required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position is subject to TDY or business travel requirements to various locations. This may require travel via privately owned vehicles, commercial transport platforms, and/or military aircraft, ships, and vehicles.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical annually and thereafter.
  • This position is designated Tier 3, Non-Critical Sensitive, Moderate Risk and requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance Level as a condition of employment.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50lbs.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11.
  • This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
  • Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service which includes the following: Assisting and participating in the planning and evaluation of patient needs and in providing a safe and therapeutic environment. Take patient vital signs and documents in Emergency Room. Collect information from personal interview, medical records, medical personnel, and any other concerned person in order to obtain a thorough clinical history.
  • OR Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree.(NOTE: You must attach a copy of your transcripts)
  • OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.(NOTE: You must attach a copy of your transcripts)
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
  • One year trial/probationary period may be required.
