About The Position

SHIELDS’ mission is to develop, deliver and evaluate culturally sensitive, comprehensive service models that empower and advocate for high-risk families in South Los Angeles. The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) provides comprehensive psychiatric assessments, diagnoses, medication management, and treatment for individuals with mental health and co-occurring substance use disorders. Working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, the PMHNP delivers trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, and culturally responsive care to support underserved and vulnerable populations.

Requirements

• Master's or Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited program required.
• Current California RN and APRN licensure
• Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Board Certification (PMHNP-BC)
• DEA registration
• State controlled substance registration
• Current BLS/CPR certification
• Strong clinical assessment skills
• Strong diagnostic skills
• Strong communication skills
• Strong documentation skills
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team

Nice To Haves

• Two or more years of psychiatric care experience in community mental health, nonprofit, outpatient, or integrated behavioral health settings
• Experience serving individuals with serious mental illness, substance use disorders, homelessness, or trauma
• Proficiency with electronic health records
• Knowledge of psychopharmacology and evidence-based psychiatric treatment
• Understanding of trauma-informed and recovery-oriented care
• Practices with cultural humility
• Ability to build therapeutic relationships with diverse populations
• Ability to manage competing clinical priorities effectively
• Commitment to ethical practice and ongoing professional development

Responsibilities

• Conducting psychiatric evaluations
• Diagnosing conditions using DSM-5-TR criteria
• Developing individualized treatment plans
• Prescribing and monitoring psychiatric medications
• Assessing psychiatric emergencies
• Collaborating with clinical and community partners
• Educating clients and families
• Maintaining accurate EHR documentation
• Participating in treatment team meetings and quality improvement initiatives
• Ensuring compliance with HIPAA, accreditation standards, and all applicable state and federal regulations
• Supporting the agency's mission by providing compassionate, person-centered care
• Performing other duties as assigned
