About The Position

Western State Hospital is seeking a full time Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Floater to provide cross-coverage across the facility while delivering psychiatric care as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner for assigned units and provide Staff On-Duty and Psych Backup coverage for hospital as scheduled. Western State Hospital, part of the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS), has been a leader in psychiatric treatment since 1828. WSH is a 302-bed Joint Commission/CMS-accredited psychiatric facility located in the scenic Shenandoah Valley. Requirements

  • Knowledge of psychiatry at the Nurse Practitioner level, which is a post-graduate nursing level with special training in psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment/therapeutics.
  • Knowledgeable about laboratory evaluations and laboratory monitoring of psychopharmacologic agents.
  • Expertise in the application of nursing practices
  • Ability to teach individuals and groups
  • Consultation, collaboration and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Providing direct psychiatric care of patients on the assigned unit including: Psychiatric assessment; Patient and family interviews; Psychopharmacologic management; etc.
  • Planning and implementing psychiatric, medical, and behavioral rehabilitation treatment plans for patients on this service
  • Liaison with community mental health center staff in preparing and implementing patient discharge plans
  • Supervision of psychiatric nurse practitioner students
  • Reviewing of case formulations, treatment plans, documentation, and other activities of nursing students on the service
  • Reviewing orders, emergency decisions, and treatment plans made by others (ODs) for patients on the service
