About The Position

Backpack Healthcare is seeking a part-time Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) in Virginia who can practice autonomously. This role involves providing online mental health care for children, teens, and young adults, covered by most insurance. As a clinician-led and minority-owned company, we are specifically looking for PMHNPs who can practice independently without requiring an MD collaboration agreement, leveraging Virginia's autonomous practice environment. While practicing autonomously, you will be an integral part of an integrated care team, collaborating with therapists, psychiatrists, and care coordinators. The role emphasizes bringing the full scope of your expertise to a supportive team environment.

Requirements

• Active, unrestricted Virginia PMHNP license (multi-state or compact preferred)
• Ability to practice independently without an MD collaboration agreement — required
• PMHNP-BC board certification
• Active DEA license
• Master's or doctoral degree from an accredited PMHNP program
• Experience with or strong interest in working with youth and families
• Comfortable working independently in a telehealth environment
• Strong clinical judgment, clear communication, and genuine empathy

Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and formulate evidence-based diagnoses
• Develop individualized treatment plans in partnership with patients and their families
• Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications, monitor effectiveness, and adjust as needed
• Provide brief supportive interventions and psychoeducation alongside medication management
• Collaborate with therapists, psychiatrists, and care coordinators in regular case reviews
• Maintain accurate, timely documentation in our EHR
• Educate families about diagnoses, treatment options, and what to expect
