About The Position

The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) will provide comprehensive mental health services to patients of all ages, helping them navigate complex psychiatric conditions, and improve their quality of life. The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner is responsible for conducting thorough psychiatric evaluations, diagnosis of mental health conditions, and the development of individualized treatment plans. The PMHNP will prescribe and manage psychotropic medications, carefully monitoring patients for effectiveness and potential side effects. They also provide brief psychotherapy and counseling, offering support to individuals, families, or groups dealing with mental health challenges. The PMHNP will work in collaboration with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to ensures holistic care, while maintaining thorough documentation in compliance with healthcare standards. Additionally, the PMHNP will stay current with emerging best practices through ongoing professional development and education.

Requirements

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited PMHNP program
  • Board certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC)
  • Current and unrestricted Nurse Practitioner (NP) license in New York State
  • 2-3 years of experience working in an outpatient mental health setting as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
  • Experience working with children and adults
  • DEA registration for prescription authority
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative care team.
  • Exhibited ability to effectively work within an inclusive and culturally and linguistically diverse environment.
  • Strong computer skills, especially with electronic medical records, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and web-based health information systems.
  • English speaking and writing fluency required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with medication assisted treatment (MAT) preferred
  • Bilingual skills desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations through office and telehealth visits, including patient history, mental status examinations, and diagnostic assessments.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans, considering patient needs, preferences, and goals, often in collaboration with clinical counseling staff and other healthcare professionals.
  • Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications, monitoring for efficacy and side effects.
  • Provide brief psychotherapy and counseling as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure holistic and coordinated care.
  • Assess and manage psychiatric emergencies, including suicidal ideation and acute distress.
  • Make appropriate referrals to other specialists or support services as needed.
  • Educate patients and families about diagnoses, treatment plans, and medication management.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in compliance with healthcare regulations and policies.
  • Participate in case reviews, peer consultations, and professional development activities.
  • Review and approve treatment plans of clinical counseling staff.
  • Establish and maintain a culture that is recovery oriented, person-centered, and grounded in trauma informed care.
  • Provide education to clinical counseling staff on psychiatric diagnosis and treatment.
  • Engage in evidence-based treatment and remain up to date on emerging best practices through on-going professional development and education.
  • Attend agency and department in-service training and staff meetings as well as any other agency related activities as required.
