About The Position

Backpack Healthcare is seeking a Virginia-licensed Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) to provide accessible mental health care for children, teens, and young adults through telehealth. As a clinician-led, minority-owned organization, we aim to create a behavioral health experience where clinicians have autonomy and a strong support team. This role involves autonomous practice, flexible scheduling, and collaboration with a multidisciplinary care team, including therapists, psychiatrists, and care coordinators, to achieve better outcomes for children and families.

Requirements

• Active, unrestricted Virginia PMHNP license
• Ability to practice independently without an MD collaboration agreement
• PMHNP-BC board certification
• Active DEA license
• Master's or doctoral degree from an accredited PMHNP program
• Afternoon, evening, and/or weekend availability required
• Comfortable delivering care through telehealth
• Excellent communication and documentation skills
• Compassionate, culturally responsive approach to patient and family care

Nice To Haves

• Experience working with children, adolescents, young adults, and/or families preferred
• Strong clinical judgment and comfort practicing autonomously

Responsibilities

• Conducting comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and developing diagnostic formulations
• Creating individualized treatment plans with patients and families
• Prescribing and managing psychotropic medications
• Monitoring treatment effectiveness, safety, and clinical progress
• Providing brief supportive interventions and psychoeducation
• Collaborating with therapists, psychiatrists, and care coordinators through case consultation and care planning
• Educating families about diagnoses, medications, treatment options, and expected outcomes
• Maintaining accurate, timely clinical documentation in the EHR
• Supporting a culture of high-quality, trauma-informed, culturally responsive care
