Responsibilities

  • Provides direct nursing and psychiatric care to residents and direction to Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN).
  • Assesses health care needs of residents, initiates and directs implementation of any nursing treatment plans to meet established goals for each resident.
  • Integrates nursing goals into interprofessional practice (IPP).
  • Monitors health and safety status of residents on assigned shift.
  • Assists in emergencies (such as first aide, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), psychotropic emergencies, etc.).
  • Records and reports unusual behaviors and/or conditions to physicians, supervisor and other appropriate personnel.
  • Implements physician’s order and assists with medical procedures as necessary.
  • Ensures medication and treatment are administered according to policy, including actual medication administration.
  • Provides professional judgment and intervention as needed.
  • Monitors closely residents requiring acute care as necessary.
  • Ensures proper maintenance and security of the night drug cupboard as appropriate.
  • Assumes primary nursing responsibility for residents assigned including nursing treatment planning, verification and review of physician orders, chart audits, self-medication plans, human sexuality programs, medication administration, infection control, physical assessments and health care related scenario programs, as appropriate to assigned duties on assigned duty shift.
  • Participates in related meetings as required by Supervisor.
  • Responsible to communicate medical information to parents/guardians, when appropriate.
  • Monitors health care charts on cottages to ensure proper follow-up and continuity of health care.
  • Maintains records of all activities, as required.
  • Submits reports to Supervisor including but not limited to: IPP input, chart audits, psychotropic medication reviews, self-medication inputs and physical assessments.
