About The Position

The Mobile Crisis Service, a component of the NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center's Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP), provides outreach to individuals experiencing a psychiatric crisis in Washington Heights, Inwood, and nearby neighborhoods of the Bronx who have been unable to access mental health treatment. The multi-disciplinary team makes home visits to engage individuals, assess their clinical needs, and determine appropriate services. Interventions are made to reduce the immediate severity of the crisis, and referrals are provided to other indicated resources such as outpatient clinics, detox and substance abuse treatment programs, social support services, and psychiatric emergency rooms.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Certificate from state-approved peer specialist training program from OMH
  • Active BLS from AHA

  • Previous experience working with multi-cultural and/or underserved communities

Responsibilities

  • Provide peer support services to patients with serious mental illnesses as an active member of the CPEP Team.
  • Function as a role model to peers, exhibiting competency in personal recovery and the use of coping skills.
  • Serve as a consumer advocate, providing consumer information and peer support for CPEP/Mobile Crisis patients.
  • Promote community socialization, recovery, self-advocacy, self-help, and the development of natural support.
  • Assist in the acceptance and triage of newly referred patients.
  • Accompany Mobile Crisis staff on field visits.
  • Provide prompt assistance in responding to patient emergencies.
